City - the legendary car manufactured by Honda, despite its modest size embodying all of the company's best technology. Its development has been carried out since 1978, and the release began in 1981. The compact body of this typical “urban” hatchback (the name fully defines the content, although the name Honda Jazz was first used in Europe) has a length of only 3.4 meters, while the City is built according to the unique Tall design with priority in height and allows four adults feel comfortable in it. The body is three-door, hard, which allowed to endow this car with almost sporting habits and in the top-end modification to install a powerful highly accelerated 1.2-liter turbo four engine (110 hp). The simpler versions were content with an “aspirated” power of 63-67 hp. A commercial van City Pro was also offered, the engine of which had a reserve of 61 “strength”.
The first-generation Honda City has a simple, stylistically ascetic interior in a sporting spirit. Rough direct forms of panels, a thin steering wheel and an equally thin long “stick” of a manual transmission lever are striking, even the instrument cluster looks extremely simple. At the same time, the car has rather comfortable seats with conveniently formed pillows, while the front ones have integrated head restraints and good lateral support. Standard equipment included a rear wiper and heated rear window (with the exception of completely utilitarian versions), a radio, a fully folding rear sofa. More expensive versions of the hatchback offered a full-time cassette player, tachometer, fabric inserts in the door panels, some models could be equipped with air conditioning. The TURBO versions featured a more aggressive exterior, bucket-type sports seats, and a rear shelf in the trunk. The high-roof version of the R-Manhattan Roof offered a ceiling-mounted audio system and an electric sunroof. A unique option for the Honda City was the Motocompo folding scooter (with a 50 cc engine), which was located in the trunk of the hatchback. With the advent of the TURBO II model, the exterior design of the car has become even more spectacular. It should be noted that the “hot” models were distinguished by a fashionable digital speedometer under the tachometer scale and a boost pressure indicator.

The base 1.2-liter Honda City engine has a 4 SOHC design and in the simplest atmospheric carburetor versions with a compression ratio of 10: 1 produces a maximum power of 61 or 67 horsepower, with a torque of 96-98 Nm. The TURBO models, released in 1982, were initially equipped with a 100-hp unit. (147 Nm). Compared to the aspirated motor, the ER series engine was thoroughly redesigned and had no more than 10% of the common parts. In addition, Honda’s original PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system was first introduced. This modification made the car incredibly popular. Later, the TURBO II model appeared with an intercooler and a slightly increased compression ratio (from 7. 5: 1 to 7.6: 1). The addition of an intercooler made it possible to increase the maximum power to 110 hp, and the torque increased to 160 Nm. At the same time, with the throttle fully open, a function was activated that increased the boost pressure by 10% in just 10 seconds. As a result, the hatchback accelerated from zero to 100 km / h in just 7.8 seconds (City Turbo in 8.6 seconds), and the specific power indicator was about 6.7 kg / l. with. Sports models of the hatchback were equipped exclusively with a 5-speed "mechanics" with the appropriate settings, and the usual models with a 4-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic transmission.

When developing the suspension of Honda City, the manufacturer adopted a scheme with MacPherson struts for all four wheels. Naturally, the chassis of the turbo models received the necessary improvements - this was done by the Mugen studio: reactive traction was added to the levers, stiffer springs and shock absorbers, stabilizers front and rear, more powerful disc front brakes were installed. Wheelbase Honda City has a size of only 2.22 m. The length of the body - 3380-3420 mm, width 1570-1625 mm, height 1460-1470 mm. In the R-Manhattan model, the body height is increased by 10 cm. Due to its compact size, Honda City has a turning radius of 4.5 m. As for the dimensions of the cabin, its length is 1625 mm, width and height are 1320 and 1205 mm. The trunk is modest, but if you fold the back seat, you get a compartment of about 1 m deep and 1.3 m wide. In addition, Honda City had numerous clothing compartments.

The safety of the first generation Honda City meets the current requirements of its time. The car body met the necessary standards for passive safety. Adopted halogen headlights for more efficient lighting of the road, safety design of the exterior door handles, bumpers, interior panels, three-point belts installed front and rear. In the first generation Honda City, although it was a very compact car, but in contrast to the key cars of that time, it had quite full-fledged characteristics - both in dynamics and driving performance, and in the class of “hot” hatchbacks it offered completely unique capabilities, made this little car a real legend. Unfortunately, the models of this series introduced into our country back in the 90s mainly have a deplorable technical condition, it is not so easy to find spare parts for them. But the more unique will be the restored car, if you attach a hand to it.
The Honda City cabriolet was developed in 1984 with the participation of Pininfarina, a well-known Italian manufacturer of special vehicles, with the aim of modernizing the basic body structure, designing the soft top and its layout. To give the City Cabriolet more originality, wide wheels and extended arches were used, as well as some external details in the spirit of the TURBO II model, emphasizing the style of the fully open car and its attractive exterior design. Offered 12 body color options and many additional options. Under the hood - an atmospheric four-cylinder COMBAX gasoline engine with a working volume of 1.2 liters.
Built on the basis of the first generation Honda City hatchback, the convertible has a simple, stylistically ascetic interior in a sporting spirit and the most necessary minimum of basic equipment. At the same time, two types of finishes are available: from high-quality fabric, as well as using vinyl skin that is resistant to pollution. For the manufacture of soft tops, we used a material with excellent weather resistance, developed by Honda, which at the same time meets the requirements of high heat and sound insulation. The roof develops mechanically, quite easily and quickly. The side mirrors of the car are manually adjustable and can be folded up, the convertible has an effective ventilation system, the manufacturer offered air conditioning and a high-quality audio system with powerful speakers, alloy wheels and much more. A standard 1.2 liter ER hatchback engine called the COMBAX was installed in the Honda City Cabriolet (short for COMpact Blazing combustion AXiom: the principle of fast combustion with a high combustion density). The maximum power of this carburetor power unit reaches a value of 67 horsepower. In combination with an automatic transmission (in the base - 5-speed manual), engine power - 63 liters. with. With a car weight of 800-810 kg, the specific power is about 12-13 kg per horsepower - far from the worst indicator for an open-body model.

When developing the suspension of the Honda City Cabriolet, the manufacturer adopted a scheme with MacPherson struts for all four wheels, with stabilizers in the front and rear, ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear. The wheelbase has a size of 2.22 m. The body length is 3420 mm, width 1625 mm, height 1470 mm. Due to its compact dimensions, the Honda City Cabriolet has a turning radius of just 4.6 m. As for the dimensions of the passenger compartment, its length is 1615 mm, width and height are 1310 and 1180 mm. The trunk is more than modest in size, but enough to take along a few travel bags. In addition, the rear seat can be folded to accommodate larger items. Safety Honda City Cabriolet meets the current requirements of its time. The car body met the necessary standards for passive safety. Adopted halogen headlights for more efficient lighting of the road, safety design of the exterior door handles, bumpers, interior panels, three-point belts installed front and rear. It can be noted that the convertible has a reinforced lower body to compensate for the lack of a roof. In addition, this car, even with the top completely removed, remains a safety arc.

Honda City Cabriolet is a unique car that at one time aroused interest no less than the Golf Cabriolet Mk1. It could be operated as a regular three-door hatchback or enjoy an open-air ride. The disadvantages were not enough high rigidity of the body compared to the standard three-door, water leakage from rain during a strong wind (although some hardtop sedans are not better). Today, in their homeland in Japan, and in other countries, the few cars preserved in their original form in this series are a real pride of collectors. There are also examples of “engine swap” when they install a “related” motor, but from a charged modification of the “TURBO II”, making the cabriolet more “hot”.
