The sixth generation Honda Civic demonstrates the next phase of global change. The car received a new wheelbase and added in length. Although the weight increased, it was partly offset by the increased engine power, which, in turn, seriously improved their environmental performance and efficiency - a variator appeared in the battle for the last parameter, due to which the offer for transmission also expanded. In his homeland in Japan, Civic for the third time achieves the title of "Best Car of the Year." In general, this generation retained the principles implemented in previous generations, in particular regarding the best racing traditions of Honda. So the appearance of the super-modification Type R with a powerful 185-horsepower engine in 1997 can be considered quite natural. It is worth noting that the Integra and NSX models have modifications with the same name. Compared with the previous generation, the hatchback's modification line has become one less “intermediate” configuration. For the most unpretentious buyers, only the basic EL equipment with a 1.3-liter engine and a slightly changed level of equipment was left, which allowed to give priority to the filling of more expensive VTi, Ri and SiR trim levels. As for the top version of Type R, this modification, intended only for the domestic market, has acquired a special personality - due to the presence of an aerodynamic body kit and reduced ground clearance by 15 mm. And if you add Recaro sports seats, Momo steering wheel, a titanium gear knob, which is pleasant to hold in your hands, and a carbon dashboard, to the reinforced brake system, LSD, sports ABS, which make the car's driving performance perfect, it’s clear how much a pronounced sports image has this car. In the design of the cockpit, it is worth noting the special arrangement of pedals specially adapted for active sports driving. Summing up, we can say that the Honda Civic Type R is a first-class sports car.

As before, some Honda Civic engines have a SOHC design with one overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. The engine range starts with a 1.3-liter engine. With electronic fuel injection (Honda PGM-FI), its power is now 91 hp. at 6300 rpm. One and a half liter engine for picking VTi power of 130 hp got a 3-stage SOHC VTEC system. This system is a combination of SOHC VTEC and SOHC VTEC-E. Only one valve works at low revs, both valves at medium revs, and high-performance cams come into action at high revs. Thus, significantly improved efficiency compared to previous modifications of the motor. For SiR / SiR II modifications, 1.6 liter B16A (DOHC VTEC) engines are designed in 155 hp versions. (with automatic transmission) and 170 hp (Manual transmission). Well, the specially modified 1.6-liter B16B engine closes the line, the power of which is brought up to 185 hp. This motor is designed for the top-of-the-range Type R equipment, the field of activity of which includes active participation in racing competitions, and which is equipped with only a 5-speed manual transmission. The car's suspension has a double independent lever-type design, most suitable for the implementation of the Honda Civic sports character. However, to the basic trim levels, as before, this applies to a lesser degree: the front and rear stabilizers are the prerogative of only more expensive trim levels, but for the SiR versions, a front strut is added to further increase rigidity. Accordingly, other suspension settings are provided due to stiffer springs and shock absorbers of sports modifications.

Raising the car to a new level, the manufacturer changed the approach to equipment in terms of safety. Now, even in the basic configurations, front airbags were optionally offered (since 1996 - the standard). The equipment of expensive complete sets includes an anti-lock brake system. The SiR II and Type R trim levels feature an LSD limited slip differential (in combination with a 5-speed manual gearbox).

Honda Civic - a great car, suitable (as the name implies) both for "civilian" purposes, and for the implementation of an active driving style. Sixth-generation cars, despite their moral and physical obsolescence, still show an acceptable balance between price and technical condition. And, of course, with this in mind, the price difference between the proposed copies of this generation can be very significant.
The sixth generation Honda Civic was introduced in three types of bodies: a three-door hatchback, a coupe and a sedan. All models are built on the platform of the previous generation sedan, which had a longer wheelbase. If we talk about the new Civic sedan, it became a few centimeters longer than its predecessor, and, importantly, the internal space received an additional increase - it became a little freer in the legs in front and behind. The new Civic has an improved appearance, better sound insulation. The series of new 1.6-liter engines offered for him also became more powerful.
In terms of equipment, the sixth-generation Honda Civic looks good, especially if you take into account not the simplest basic versions, but the configuration, including a full-featured set of equipment. In this case, there is air conditioning, power windows front and rear, central locking with remote control, body-color mirrors, alloy wheels and factory-tinted windows. The driver's seat is adjustable in height, and there is a dividing armrest in front, the driver and front passenger have cosmetic mirrors in sun visors. An optional climate control system with a cabin filter was offered. In the base, air conditioning was installed as an option, and from the standard equipment there was an adjustable speaker and a radio.

Compared to its predecessor units, the new 1.6-liter engines, which can be mostly found under the sixth-generation Honda Civic hood, have improved performance. The base motor belongs to the SOHC design with 4 valves per cylinder and is tuned to 106 hp. and 140 Nm of torque. Gasoline consumption - 6.9-7.6 l / 100 km. An engine with a VTEC variable valve timing system and one camshaft gives out 127 “forces” and 145 Nm, while it not only provides a good increase in power, but is also optimized in terms of flow rate - 7.3-7.8 l / 100 km that only a little more indicators of less powerful brother. In addition to these modifications, you can find the Civic 1.6 MT VTi with a 160 hp DOHC VTEC engine. In addition, versions with 1.4 and 1.5 liter engines (90 and 114 hp) were very common in Europe.

Like the previous generation, the Civic has impeccable driving characteristics and sporty handling that are endowed with its fully independent suspension of all wheels. Such a scheme makes the car’s movement more predictable, increases maneuverability and responsiveness in corners, even with uneven road surfaces. The length of the body of the Civic VI sedan is 4448 mm, width 1704 mm, height 1389 mm. Wheelbase 2620 mm. As already mentioned, its slight increase was reflected in the internal space - a little less than a centimeter increased in front, and almost four centimeters - at the feet of the rear passengers. Trunk volume - 337 liters. The rear row of seats folds in a ratio of 60/40.

The safety of the sixth generation Honda Civic is ensured by the presence of standard front double airbags (for driver and passenger), as well as an optional side airbag system. Some configurations for the Russian market provided for a standard anti-lock braking system ABS. The model also has flaws. In 1998, Civic was tested to Euro NCAP standards. For the safety of adult passengers, he received a rather low rating: incomplete three stars, with a high probability of injury to the driver’s legs in frontal impact and chest in lateral.

In the sixth generation, Civic maintains and improves the overall style, the quality of production is quite high. It is also pleasant that the power indicators and efficiency remained among the developers in priority. But the engines are very demanding on the quality of the oil. In addition, this generation, despite all the improvements, is still a cramped interior. Other disadvantages of the car owners include low clearance, expensive rear axle in repair, weak iron.
The Honda Civic is associated mainly with a compact hatchback car belonging to the 1.5-liter class, as well as a 4-door sedan. However, there is also a 2-door coupe called the Civic. It was designed and developed specifically for the American market. This model of American production during the "trip" to Japan automatically became an imported machine. It began to be produced in 1991 on the basis of the fifth generation Civic. The second generation Civic Coupe started in 1996. The design of the body uses bright saturated colors of a wide range. Due to the design features of the sports coupe, the car turned out to be small in size, but it has impeccable proportions and a beautiful body line that you can be proud of. In addition, there is enough space in the rear seats and the necessary space in the luggage compartment. Therefore, despite the fact that this is a coupe, you can see the high practicality inherent in the Civic sedan.
Like the previous generation, in Japan the 1996 Civic Coupe was offered in one single configuration, and if the previous model provided at least some variety in the choice of transmission (“mechanics” or “automatic”), the new one was equipped with only one variator. The car could boast of an automatic air conditioning with climate control, a large glove box, in addition, additional consoles and pockets for small items, cosmetic mirrors with a sun visor for the driver and front passenger, tinted windows, aluminum rims with 185/65R14 tires were offered. To please the owner of this car was also a first-class audio system. The Civic Coupe is equipped only with a 1.6-liter engine with a variable valve timing system. This is the same D16A motor that was used in the previous model, but due to a change in the system on VTEC-E, environmental indicators were reconfigured, due to which the maximum power was slightly reduced - up to 120 horsepower. A distinctive feature of the SOHC VTEC-E system is the ability to work on rather poor mixtures - at low speeds this is ensured by the asymmetry of the flow of the incoming combustible mixture (one valve is closed and the other is open), which leads to additional turbulence. With an increase in speed, both valves take effect. As a result, a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption and an improvement in exhaust readings.

A double independent linkage suspension gives the Civic Coupe owner the opportunity to experience a beautiful, energetic ride. The car is equipped with a front stabilizer of the torsion type, has ventilated disc front brakes and rear drum brakes with on and off pads. The continuously variable transmission Honda Multimatic provides perfectly comfortable driving and, at the same time, additional fuel economy.

The safety of the Civic Coupe is ensured by the presence of front airbags for the driver and passenger, a three-channel anti-lock braking system of ABS, three-point seat belts and additional stiffening ribs in the doors. The driver's seat belt is additionally equipped with a buzzer and a warning lamp warning of unfastened belts. Honda Civic Coupe is somewhat apart from the Civic lineup and is therefore not too widely represented on the market. This generation cannot be called an exception. On the other hand, it is one of the most inexpensive two-door representatives of the near-sport type. And for lovers of individuality, this car fits perfectly - both in terms of comfort and dynamics.
