As the generations of Honda Civic changed, the worldwide popularity of this model steadily grew, new manufactures constantly opened in different countries. The seventh generation has opened a new page in the history of the car. Presented in several types of bodies (3- and 5-door hatchbacks, a sedan and a coupe), it received a different front suspension, in addition, it was possible to increase the interior space, providing greater comfort to the rear passengers. In Russia, the most popular were sedans and 5-door hatchbacks as the most practical types of bodies. The 3-door Civic was in demand not only in its classic version, but also in the modification of the Civic Type R - the sports derivative of this popular model, armed with a 200-horsepower engine.
The Honda Civic sedan in Russia was offered in four trim levels with a five-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic. The more expensive equipment is distinguished by climate control instead of air conditioning, heated front seats and alloy wheels, there is an electric sunroof (its buttons are located a little unusual: on the front panel to the left of the steering wheel). All Honda Civic 4D were equipped with an electric power amplifier, power accessories, an alarm system with an immobilizer, a interior with fabric trim, rear window and mirror heating. Civic 3D is equipped with alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, an alarm system with an immobilizer, a fabric-trimmed interior and an “audio preparation” consisting of two pairs of speakers and an antenna integrated into the rear window. Civic 3D and Type R differ from the sedan not only in the shape of the body, but also in the design of the front of the cabin (another dashboard with a "tide" on which the gearshift lever is mounted). In addition, the Honda Civic Type R features a sports package: front, rear spoilers, side kit. The Honda Civic 3D received the same 1.6-liter 16-valve engine as the 4-door version. This is a SOHC VTEC II engine (110 hp) with multi-point injection PGM-FI. As for the Type R version, a two-liter engine with 200 hp is installed here. at 7400 rpm The maximum speed of the car with it is 235 km / h, it takes only 6.5 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 100 km / h, while the fuel consumption in combined driving mode is only 8.9 l / 100 km. The main technical innovation of the car is a lightweight engine flywheel, which, according to Honda Motor Co., allowed to reduce acceleration time from standstill to 100 km / h by two tenths of a second. In addition to these engines offered for Russian customers, this generation Civic can be equipped with other versions of gasoline engines or direct injection diesel engines. In addition, there are modifications with a hybrid petrol-electric power unit of 1.3 liters (90 liters. s.), but all of them were not officially delivered to Russia.

In this generation of Honda Civic, MacPherson struts are now used instead of a double wishbone design due to changes in layout. The rear suspension remains unchanged. However, the essence of Civic’s character didn’t affect this much - as the manufacturer claims, he remained the same “hondian” tough, sporty. Other innovations include the use of an electric amplifier, as well as a change in the design of the exhaust system - by moving the resonator to the rear, it was possible to make the floor in the cabin completely flat.

The increase in the safety level of the Honda Civic compared to previous generations was mainly due to the wider use of airbags - there are four of them (two front and two side). At the same time, all versions are equipped with three-point seat belts, door stiffeners, ABS system. Passive safety of the car at altitude - according to the results of crash tests EuroNСАР in 2001, he received four out of five stars.

The seventh generation Honda Civic has become the most popular in the entire previous history of the model. On the world stage, he became one of the best-selling cars. Its popularity in Russia is largely due to the success of previous generations, and the new Civic was able to demonstrate the very best qualities of the model: power, reliability and economy of engines, “assembled” suspension, comfort.

The Honda Civic Hybrid appeared as a result of installing a hybrid system on the Civic Ferio sedan. The hybrid version was developed under the theme of “world-class environmental indicators”, while emphasizing the high practicality of the sedan. The car is characterized by an aerodynamic bumper, a trunk spoiler, which create minimal aerodynamic drag. The advantage of the Honda hybrid system lies in the subtle interaction of the electrical and mechanical parts of the power plant and their reduction in size. The main components are placed behind the passenger seats, while in the luggage compartment managed to leave quite a lot of free space. Even before the release, the model was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, and sales began in December 2001.
The Civic Hybrid, as already mentioned, externally is distinguished by the presence of aerodynamic elements, and in addition, alloy wheels of an exclusive design. The car received an individual dashboard design with a digital indicator of engine parameters and battery level. The chic interior is emphasized, in particular, with a leather steering wheel braid and chrome trim elements. Initially, the seat upholstery provided for the use of inexpensive fabrics, later they were replaced by a more pleasant to the touch material. After restyling in 2003, the design of the elements of the front and rear of the body was updated, a touch LCD panel with a 6.5-inch monitor and HDD appeared. The armrest of the driver's seat, the trim of the central panel and the doors "under the tree" are added. In addition, protection against theft has been strengthened - an immobilizer is now standardly installed on the model.

The Civic Hybrid powertrain deserves close attention. This system is called IMA and is a proprietary development of Honda (it was previously installed on the Honda Insight and has since been improved). The power plant consists of a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine with VTEC system, an electric motor, a power control unit and a Multimatic S variator. A gasoline engine plays a leading role, an electric motor plays the role of an “assistant”. This allowed us to keep the hybrid dynamics close to the traditional “Honda” understanding (naturally, at a discount on engine volume and power), perhaps, slightly sacrificing considerations of economy (this did not become a dogma here), but by the way, it is already high : IMA guarantees low fuel consumption - only 3.4 liters per 100 km. In addition to the Civic Hybrid, customers were also offered the “GX” version, whose 1.7-liter engine was designed to run on liquefied natural gas. Actually, this is the North American representative of this generation of Civic, whose production is carried out in Ohio.

Civic Hybrid has completely retained the shape of its gasoline counterpart. The management method has not changed at all. The bodywork and chassis of the Civic Hybrid are identical to those on the Civic Ferio. The front suspension is rack-mount type. Rear - on double wishbones. The car is driven by a variator. Steering - EPS (with electric power). Front brakes - ventilated disc, rear - drum. With a wheelbase of 2620 mm, the minimum turning radius is 5.3 m.

Standard safety equipment includes two airbags for the driver and front passenger, an ABS system with integrated EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and Brake Assist (emergency braking system). The car has seat belts with load limiters and pretensioners, child seat fasteners, stiffeners in the doors. As an option, side airbags, gas discharge headlights (high / low beam) are offered.

By its very existence, the Civic Hybrid clearly demonstrates the advent of a new era in automobile history. Excellent fuel economy coupled with high reliability and comfort, good dynamic performance make it a good choice for everyday use. Although the hybrid versions of the current generation Civic on the market do not represent a significant percentage, they are of some interest.
