The flagship Legend model was developed by Honda in order to compete with leading European manufacturers (primarily BMW and Mercedes-Benz) in the segment designated as the upper middle class. In the domestic market, the car was supposed to compete with Toyota Crown and Nissan Cedric / Gloria. The first in 1985 appeared Legend sedan. His body was designed according to new technological standards, work was carried out jointly with the British company Austin Rover Group (the Rover 800 model was built on the same base). The car was created with increased attention to aerodynamics (CD = 0.35, but note that the later coupe has even less - 0.3). Under the hood of the sedan is a V6 gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters, 2.5 liters or 2.7 liters. In the interior of its new car, Honda has successfully realized the racing spirit of the company, which is expressed in the instrument panel of the original form. The four-spoke steering wheel has cruise control buttons; in the center console there is a place for a 2DIN size radio. The interior panels are finished with wood, the seats are made of high-quality fabric made of 100% wool. For maximum convenience, all seats, even the rear ones, have height-adjustable head restraints, while the rear sofa has pronounced lateral support in extreme places, making it the most comfortable for two passengers. In the simplest configuration, there were front fog lights, air conditioning, a radio, electric windows. Options included a rear spoiler, alloy wheels. In expensive versions, the sedan was equipped with 15-inch casting, electric driver's seat, climate control and cruise control, leather trim panels with wood and steering wheel, as well as optional leather seats. In 1988, a small restyling further improved the exterior and interior appearance of the Honda Legend.

The Honda Legend sedan was equipped with a V-shaped 6-cylinder powertrain design SOHC with a 24-valve timing. The engines are equipped with an electronic fuel injection system and possessed tractive and power indicators serious enough for those years. The two-liter engine of the C20A brand developed a maximum power of 145 liters. with. (at 6500 rpm) and a torque of 167 Nm, its 2.5-liter "brother" - 165 "forces" (at 6000 rpm) and 211 Nm (at 4500 rpm). Honda Legend V6Xi with a 2.5-liter engine and a 5-speed “mechanics” was able to accelerate to a maximum speed of 223 km / h and gain about 100 km / h in about 8 seconds. With a 2.0-liter engine, the maximum speed reached 210 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h in 10 seconds. In 1988, instead of a 2.5-liter unit, cars for the domestic market began to install a 2.7-liter engine (180 hp) in combination with an automatic transmission, and in 1989, a V6 2.0 turbo engine settled under the hood of V6Ti versions developing 190 hp Depending on the modification, on one liter of gasoline, the sedan traveled from 8.5 to 10 km, that is, it spent from 10 to 11.8 liters per 100 km.  The first generation Honda Legend adopts an independent suspension design to meet a sufficiently high level of comfort. The car was equipped with disc brakes in front (ventilated) and rear, providing the best deceleration. The dimensions of the sedan were: 4810 mm in length, 1735 and 1390 mm in width and height. The size of the wheelbase of 2760 mm hinted at a quite spacious interior - indeed, its dimensions exceeded expectations: it stretched to 1945 mm in length, its width and height were 1435 and 1125 mm. A quite roomy trunk of the sedan (396 liters) allowed taking the most necessary on the road, and for the convenience of loading its edge between the rear lights was brought to the bumper. When creating the Honda Legend, in addition to aerodynamics, considerable attention was paid to reducing vibrations transmitted to the body from the engine and from the road. For this, the car received not only a carefully thought-out chassis design, but also reinforced boxes of power elements of the body, which positively affected passive safety. One of the first Japanese cars Legend was equipped with a driver's airbag SRS (since 1987, and in the North American model, which was sold as Acura Legend, - since 1986). The car was equipped with three-point belts, anti-lock braking system (standard in expensive specifications).

Honda Legend, fully justifying its name, has become a real "legend" of the Japanese automobile industry of the 80s. This car turned out to be very comfortable, superbly equipped, powerful and inexpensive, which ensured its success in world markets. It is believed that the appearance of Legend even served as an example to follow when creating the Subaru Legacy. The first generation Honda Legend was characterized by a very strong body, but in old used cars corrosion makes itself felt, in addition, it can be difficult to find parts.
Following the sedan, which appeared in 1985, the company soon released a first-class coupe Honda Legend. The car had a two-door hard-top body, shortened by 55 mm wheelbase and was slightly lower in height than the sedan - coupled with a short roof, it created an original style: long overhangs, a squat sports profile with excellent aerodynamic performance (CD = 0. 3 - very good for that time). The Honda Legend Coupé was powered by a new 180-horsepower 2.7-liter 24-valve V6 engine.
The interior of the Honda Legend coupe has successfully implemented the racing spirit of the company, which is expressed in the instrument panel of the original form. The four-spoke steering wheel has cruise control buttons; in the center console there is a place for a 2DIN size radio. Options coupe looks pretty rich. Luxurious wood trim with a choice of colors and genuine leather seat upholstery, a large list of equipment: headlights with a washer and a wiper, fog lights and alloy wheels 15 inches, separate climate control (front and rear), driver's seat with height adjustment and lumbar support, adjustable rear head restraints, full power accessories and a door opening system with a remote entrance. In 1988, a small restyling further improved the exterior and interior appearance of the Honda Legend.

The Honda Legend coupe was equipped with a V-shaped 6-cylinder SOHC engine with 24-valve timing. The engine is equipped with an electronic fuel injection system and possessed tractive and power indicators serious enough for those years. With a displacement of 2.7 liters, the C27A engine developed a maximum power of 180 hp. (at 6000 rpm) and a torque of 226 Nm (at 4500 rpm). Interestingly, the car was supplied to foreign markets with both a 5-speed manual and an automatic 4-speed gearbox. But in Japan, the coupe was offered only with automatic transmission. However, in this modification the dynamic performance of the model was slightly limited: if the coupe on the “mechanics” had a maximum speed of 230 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h - 8.3 seconds, then the maximum speed of version 2.7 AT reached 224 km / h, it took 9.6 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 100 km / h. The car consumed approximately 11.8 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

In the first-generation Honda Legend coupe, an independent suspension design is adopted to meet a sufficiently high level of comfort. The car was equipped with disc brakes in front (ventilated) and rear, providing the best deceleration. The dimensions of the compartment were: 4775 mm in length, 1745 and 1370 mm in width and height. The size of the wheelbase is 2705 mm (versus 2760 mm for a sedan). Accordingly, the length of the cabin was slightly less than that of the sedan - 1845 mm versus 1945 mm, its width and height were 1445 and 1095 mm (for the sedan it was 1435 and 1125 mm, respectively). The compartment luggage compartment is as spacious as the sedan, and it allows you to take the most necessary on the road, and for the convenience of loading, its edge between the rear lights was brought to the bumper.
