Honda Legend 2 generation 10.1990 - 08.1992

2 generation
10.1990 - 08.1992
E-KA7, E-KA8
2 generation
Sedan
Coupe
Thanks to the first generation of Legend, Honda was able to gain a place in the niche of the global automotive market, in which cars suitable for tall people (especially in the USA) are in special demand. In 1990, the first generation was replaced by the second - under the slogan “Status of the future”. The appearance quite distinguishes this generation from the previous one. If earlier it could be characterized by such words as “light” and “agile”, now it has become more heavyweight, and the length of the body is almost 5 meters. To match the solid appearance, increased size and weight, the Legend sedan was equipped with a 215-horsepower 3.2 V6 engine, which allowed to maintain high dynamics. The interior of the Honda Legend of the second generation has incorporated all the trends of Japanese design of the 80-90s. A convenient solution is the on-board system unit with an LCD screen located at the top and the climate control panel located below. In the new line, complete sets of the Alpha class in the top performance and Beta in the base were offered. In the initial configuration, the car had foglights, 15-inch alloy wheels, a steering wheel adjustable in height, wood trim, climate control, electric driver's seat, radio. The Alpha version included leather trim for door cards, an electric rear seat, an electric steering wheel adjustment (incl. h. Departure), keyless entry system, 2DIN radio. For both versions, an optional rear spoiler, sunroof, leather interior, navigation system were offered as options. In 1991, simpler and more affordable versions of the Alpha II and Beta II were added.

Like the previous generation, the Legend KA7 / 8 series is equipped with a V-shaped 6-cylinder engine, but its volume was immediately increased to 3.2 liters, thanks to which it develops a power of 215 hp, sufficient to “drag” more heavy body. In addition, in this case, the engine is located longitudinally, which perfectly balances the car as a whole. The unit develops maximum power at 5500 rpm, the maximum torque reaches a value of 299 Nm at 4500 rpm. Combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission (no option was offered for the domestic Japanese market), the sedan was able to accelerate to a maximum speed of 224 km / h and in about 8.4 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h. It is worth noting that the C32A engine has a 24-valve SOHC design, an injection system with the recommended use of premium gasoline (AI-98). He also pleased with a good resource (if you do not save on grease and consumables). Perhaps the main drawback is the high fuel consumption, which according to the manufacturer was about 13.2 l / 100 km.

As a front-wheel drive model, the Honda Legend has impeccable driving characteristics that put it on a par with high-end rear-wheel drive cars. The driving performance is also positively influenced by the use of an independent two-link four-wheel suspension. The car is equipped with power steering, disc brakes (front ventilated). As standard, it was equipped with 205 / 65R15 tires. The dimensions of the second-generation Legend sedan were: length 4940 mm, width 1810 mm, height 1405 mm. The wheelbase of the sedan increased from 2760 to 2910 mm. However, this did not affect the dimensions of the cabin: its length remains the same - 1945 mm, the width increased by 40 mm and amounts to 1475 mm, and the height is 1130 mm (+5 mm). The car has a quite roomy trunk (428 liters) with a small loading height.

In accordance with the new safety standards, lateral protection beams in the doors, driver's airbag, pretensioner belts, anti-lock braking system were included in the basic package of the Honda Legend sedan of the 1991 model year. Options included an airbag for the front passenger. In a complete set "Alpha" TCS traction control system was standardly installed.

The second-generation Honda Legend is one of the best Japanese cars of the early 90s. It has excellent handling and demonstrates perfect grip, and some users even emotionally noted that this is a front-wheel drive car that “really wanted to be rear-wheel drive” - just look under the hood and find a longitudinally placed unit. Numerous pluses (stylish appearance, build quality, unpretentiousness, etc.) are superimposed and cons: high fuel consumption, difficulties with spare parts.
In the second generation, the Honda Legend in the coupe is still a significantly different model from the sedan. In addition to the differences in body structure - here it is a hard two-door, hard-top type, with struts maximally pushed back and opening rear vents - the coupe retains a shorter wheelbase: 80 mm less than the sedan. If we compare with the coupe of the previous generation, the car became larger (its length increased from 4775 to 4880 mm) and heavier. To match the solid look, increased size and weight, the Legend coupe was similarly equipped with a 215-horsepower 3.2 V6 engine, which allowed to maintain high dynamics. Having left the assembly line in January 1991, the Honda Legend coupe went on sale in a single configuration, which was equipped in the first category. There are electric sunroof, full power accessories, including electric rear windows, multi-wheel. The compartment doors are equipped with active locks with closers, an electric front seat is provided (10 adjustments for the driver with memory and 4 for the passenger), heated seats and side mirrors, genuine leather upholstery, radio tape recorder size 2DIN. In June 1991, the top-end version received the designation “Alpha,” and as an addition, the simpler Beta specification was released, devoid of any equipment: for example, the steering column was adjusted only by tilt, a conventional radio was installed, etc. d.

The unit develops maximum power at 5500 rpm, the maximum torque reaches a value of 299 Nm at 4500 rpm. In combination with a 4-speed automatic gearbox (an option on the “mechanics” was not offered for the domestic Japanese market), the coupe was able to accelerate to a maximum speed of 231 km / h and in about 8.4 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h. It is worth noting that the C32A engine has a 24-valve SOHC design, an injection system with the recommended use of premium gasoline (AI-98). The wheelbase of the coupe has increased from 2705 to 2830 mm. The dimensions of the cabin are: 1790 x 1460 x 1045 mm (L x W x H), which is noticeably smaller in all three dimensions than the sedan (the dimensions of its cabin are 1945 x 1475 x 1130 mm). The compartment luggage compartment is also roomy, with a small loading height.

In accordance with the new safety standards, the standard equipment for the Honda Legend coupe from 1991-1992 included side protection beams in the doors, driver and passenger airbags, pretensioner belts, and anti-lock braking system. Also, the TCS traction control was installed in the car, but a simpler version of the coupe did without it. The second-generation Honda Legend is one of the best Japanese cars of the early 90s.
