After the introduction of new standards for small cars in October 1998, Honda Life experienced a complete model change. The body, equipped with four side doors and rear “gates”, is a tall station wagon (Tall Wagon), reminiscent of its predecessor. But this car used a whole range of measures aimed at a higher level of security. When developing Life, the issue of environmental friendliness was not left without attention. All engines installed on this machine (0.7 liter, 50 hp) meet the latest Japanese requirements regarding the reduction of harmful substances in exhaust gases. Unlike the previous model, Life can now be all-wheel drive.
Significant changes have occurred in the cabin of Honda Life. Although the front panel has lost its originality, it has become even more functional and convenient, including due to the long recesses and shelves below. For models with a manual gearbox, the previous layout with a lever on the floor is preserved, and for cars with automatic transmission it is transferred to the steering column, with all the amenities that come with it when changing from a passenger seat to a driver’s and vice versa. At the start of sales, three levels of equipment were available for the Honda Life JB1 / 2. In the simplest “B type” there was air conditioning, aluminum wheels for a fee. The “G type” version included power windows, a central lock with a remote key, a radio, a rear wiper, and optional tinted windows. The “T type” version was distinguished by climate control, standard roof rails and alloy wheels. As a special offer, a version of “Menuet” (1999) based on the “G” with an improved exterior-interior and some additional options was released. In 2000, the top version of the “L type” appeared - it features full-featured equipment, including a CD player and wood trim.

The Honda Life JB1 / 2 engine (1998-2001) represents a further development of the three-cylinder engines of the SOHC 12 Series E. The power of the unit with a working volume of 660 cc increased from 48 to 50 hp. (at 7000 rpm instead of the previous 6300), and the maximum torque rose from 57 to 61 Nm (at 4500 rpm instead of the previous 5500). Improved fuel economy. The front-wheel drive model with a mechanical 5-speed gearbox is now capable of running up to 21 km on one liter of gasoline - at the predecessor it was 20 km / l. In addition to the "mechanics" of Honda Life, as before, it was equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission, in both cases the all-wheel drive version became available. The engine, and the Life transmission is quite unpretentious and reliable, if you do not demand the impossible from the machine, save on consumables and do not delay maintenance. It should be noted that at the end of 2000 a turbocharged version was added - Life Dunk. But it has many differences from the standard Life, so it deserves a separate place in the lineup.

The third-generation Honda Life has a different suspension depending on the type of drive. All versions have independent front suspension (MacPherson), rear - semi-dependent torsion bar for front-wheel drive or dependent De Dion for all-wheel drive cars. Combined brake system - front disc brakes, rear drum brakes. The standard wheel sizes are 145 / 80R12 or 155 / 65R13. The turning radius remained unchanged at 4.5 m, while the new-generation gauge increased (from 1225 on both axles to 1305/1295 front and rear), and the wheelbase extended from 2330 to 2360 mm. The dimensions of the machine itself are 3395 mm in length, 1475 and 1605 mm in width and height. The salon used to have dimensions of 1640 x 1170 x 1310 mm (L x W x H), but now its length has increased to 1660 mm, width - to 1210 mm, and only the height has become a little less - 1255 mm. As for the transportation options, Honda Life has everything in order. As before, you can get a more spacious and wider space by folding the back row, and you get a large trunk with a flat floor.

Thanks to Honda technology, there are no omissions and deficiencies in the car's security system. The front seats are equipped with SRS airbags; the body structure is designed in such a way that in case of an accident the impact is mitigated; interior equipment provides increased head protection in a collision. Optionally, the Honda Life 1998-2001 was equipped with an anti-lock brake system, an electronic brake force distribution system and an emergency braking assistance system. As a compact city car, Honda Life has many attractive sides. It is economical, tall, roomy. Good on the cross, does not take up much parking space. Compared with its predecessor, Life has become safer, better road holding. However, he was a little heavier, and his 50 "forces" would hardly seem sufficient when overtaking; other disadvantages are the owners call sailing, stiffer suspension, poor corrosion resistance, expensive parts.
