The second generation Odyssey continued the concept of its predecessor, which gained immense popularity in Japan. If we talk about the design and equipment of this model, it practically does not differ from the previous one. So we are talking more about deep modernization, rather than a conceptually new model. The second Odyssey is distinguished by the increased dimensions of the body, which is still equipped with four swing doors, plus rear "gates"; Salon - six or seven seats, located in three rows. The car became 85 mm longer and 10 mm wider, which increased the width of the cabin, but the length of the interior became a bit more modest - 2740 mm compared to 2810 for the previous generation. All Odyssey equipment is carefully selected and improved based on the wishes of users of the first generation model. The use of the gearshift lever located on the steering column, the increased interior space, third-row seats with head restraints that can be tucked under the floor, an improved suspension that gives the sedans the comfort of driving, a rigid body - all this has not practically changed and was present in the previous generation of the model , thereby showing the high class Odyssey, but has been finalized and improved. The model was offered in three traditional trim levels S, M and L. In 2000, in addition to the M, the MQ trim was added with gas-discharge headlights, a leather steering wheel, and additional high-frequency front speakers. In the configuration, the L Odyssey is equipped with a navigation system with a 7-inch display and a TV tuner, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, wood trim, optionally a BOSE sound system with 8 speakers, a leather interior, etc. The more luxurious modifications of the Prestige VG and VZ series are based on a three-liter engine and various “bonuses” of top-end equipment. In addition, since 2001, Absolute equipment was offered to customers, which comes with both engines. This version of the Odyssey, in addition to a finely tuned suspension, is distinguished by 17-inch wheels, a special spoiler, improved sound insulation and other options arising from its sporty orientation. Like the previous one, this Odyssey generation was available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive and was equipped with one of two belt-driven SOHC engines: an in-line 4-cylinder volume of 2.3 liters and 150 hp. or a 3-liter V6 engine with 210 hp Transmission - 4-speed automatic with electronic control (S-Matic) for complete sets with the base engine. For complete sets with a three-liter engine, a 5-speed automatic transmission with electronic control (S-Matic) was relied on - note that Odyssey was the first Honda car to receive just such a combination with a three-liter engine. The main measures to improve Odyssey fuel consumption are the VTEC variable valve timing system and the automatic transmission torque converter lockout mechanism. However, given the weight of the car, consumption compared with the previous generation increased slightly. The most economical Odyssey is capable of driving up to 11 km per liter of fuel, the most voracious Absolute 3.0 - 8.6 km.

The Odyssey suspension retained the same type of design - completely independent, with double wishbones. The wheelbase has not changed, the minimum turning radius of the Odyssey also remains the same - 5.7 meters. The modernized version of the Absolute with a lower center of gravity and a more rigorous tuning in its running characteristics is more like a European-made car. Nevertheless, the main strategy of this modification easily fits into the desire of developers to provide maximum driving pleasure at any speed. Four-wheel drive, offered for all versions, is Real Time 4WD, which connects automatically when the rear wheels slip.

Odyssey safety equipment includes the presence of a driver and front passenger airbags as standard; anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and “brake release” (Brake Assist); three-point seat belts in all three rows of seats and child restraints. The basis for the car is a body of increased strength, stiffening amplifiers are installed in the doors. The crash test of NASVA (Japan) in 2001 showed a good level of protection - five out of six stars for protecting the driver and the same for the front passenger.

The second generation Honda Odyssey has become even more popular than the previous one, despite the fact that today the difference in the price of used cars of these two generations is not so significant, but the choice is much greater. The advantage over the 2.3-liter modifications - they constitute the lion's share of the range. Rarer are three-liter versions of top-end trim levels, and even with all-wheel drive, but they will allow you to enjoy that Odyssey luxury that is not outdated even today. One can mention extremely rare left-handed specimens - but this is rather an exclusive one.
