Lexus GX (the name stands for Grand Crossover) became the third representative of the off-road class in the Lexus model range and is a luxury version of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The first generation went into operation in 2002. In 2009, the second generation debuted, presented by the Lexus GX460. The car is a frame SUV, while its chassis is tuned in such a way as to ensure flawless driving performance and confident driving in any conditions, whether it is city roads or off-road. Extremely comfortable and luxurious, it is made in the exclusive L-finesse brand design and equipped with a 4.6-liter V-shaped gasoline engine. It differs from the previous generation in more streamlined forms - the drag coefficient is reduced to 0.35. Having undergone a redesign in 2013, the car was improved in many respects - these versions are easily recognizable by the new spindle-shaped radiator grille.
In the Russian market, the car was offered in five configurations and already in the base has 18-inch alloy wheels and xenon headlights with washers; front seats are automatically adjusted in 8 directions, equipped with heating and ventilation; Lexus premium audio system of 9 speakers, a rearview camera and a 4.2-inch multi-information display are installed. Standard equipment also includes automatic climate control, leather trim for seats and interior details, a multi-function steering wheel, an electric sunroof, leather and wood trim for the steering wheel and gear knob, memory for the positions of the driver's seat, steering column and side mirrors is provided. Additional options include the Mark Levinson audio system, third row of seats, electrochromic exterior mirrors, heated second row of seats, three-zone climate control, an entertainment system for rear passengers, etc. In 2013, an updated version was introduced, in which the appearance was seriously adjusted and the composition of the equipment was improved, in particular, new LED low beam headlights, a media system with an 8-inch display and more appeared. The powertrain of the Lexus GX460 is a V-shaped 8-cylinder 4.6-liter 1UR-FE engine. Using systems such as Dual VVT-i (dual variable valve timing), ACIS (intake manifold geometry), EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), as well as new injectors, the engine delivers 296 liters of power. c. (DIN) at 5500 rpm and a torque of 438 Nm at 3500 rpm, while demonstrating the efficiency and environmental performance inherent in engines with much smaller volumes. 6-speed automatic transmission with electronic control - a completely new design. Up to 100 km / h the car weighing 2340 kg accelerates in just 8.3 seconds.

Lexus GX460 has an independent front suspension and a dependent rear. Adaptive Suspension (AVS) provides for three modes of operation: Normal, Sport and Comfort. As standard, the GX460 is equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system based on an electronically controlled transfer case and a central Thorsen differential. For off-road driving, a lower gear is provided. Under normal conditions, the central differential transfers 40% of the torque to the front axle and 60% to the rear. Depending on the road conditions, this ratio can vary from 50:50 to 30:70. The KDSS system (kinetic stabilization of the suspension) is standard equipment and allows you to improve the level of controllability both on the road and on the road.

The standard equipment responsible for safety includes: 10 pillows, including knee pads; anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake booster; Stability Program (VSC), which helps to avoid skidding in corners. It is important to note the presence of the Crawl Control off-road assistance system that controls braking and acceleration in difficult conditions. The Active Traction Control System (A-TRAC) actually simulates the front and rear differential locks - it brakes the slipping wheels, allowing the transmission to redirect the torque to the wheel with better grip, while the presence of a purely electronic device avoids weight gain. The problem with the VSC system, noted by the publication Consumer Reports, forced the manufacturer to carry out a mass recall of cars of the 2010 model year.

The Lexus GX460 is a great example of the luxury embodied in the body of a classic SUV. Its operation may seem problematic in cities with unresolved traffic and parking problems, but if you want to break out of the city in its ability to cope with bad roads, there is no doubt - with an abundance of intelligent “assistants”, the Lexus GX460 is able to demonstrate all its off-road potential. Based on the “golden mean” principle, the GX can be an excellent choice between the more compact Lexus RX and the flagship Lexus LX lineup.
