In 2002, Mazda Capella replaced the discontinued Mazda Capella. The car was offered in sedan, hatchback and station wagon bodies. The release of the latter type of bodywork was delayed a bit to establish mass production. This was due to the large volume of pre-orders received in the first month, many times higher than the expectations of the Japanese company. In 2005, the Mazda Atenza station wagon experienced restyling. The changes affected the exterior - the grille, the front bumper changed, and the fog lights made in the style of headlights. The rear of the car is not affected. In 2007, sales of the second generation of Atenza station wagons started.
The station wagon installed engines of 2.0 liters (150 hp), 2.3 liters (175 hp) and 2.3 liters (178 hp). Prior to restyling, only modifications equipped with a four-speed gearbox were produced. After 2005, station wagons with a five-speed automatic and six-speed manual went on sale, which replaced the previous type of transmission. The station wagon was the only first-generation Mazda Atenza body option, produced not only with front-wheel drive, but also with all-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption at the Mazda Atenza station wagon is low and amounts to 9.6-10.1 liters in the urban cycle (depending on the power and volume of the engine). On the highway, these figures are reduced to 7.6-8.1 liters. All the engines of vehicles supplied to the European market were powered by gasoline. The maximum speed of the station wagon is achieved with a 2.3 engine and is 180 km / h, with acceleration to hundreds from a standstill in 9.2 seconds. The undercarriage consists of disc brakes (ventilated in front) and a lever-type suspension (two-link mounted in front, multi-link in the back) with stabilizers. Mazda Atenza station wagon has the largest dimensions among all the bodies of the first generation: length - 4690 mm, width - 1780 mm, height - 1440 mm. The cabin has enough space for tall passengers, and the rear sofa is designed to fit just three. Only the space in the middle is not enough, which is emphasized by the different design of the seat and back, as well as the shape of the headrest. The rear seats fold down, freeing up, if necessary, more space for transporting goods. With the seats folded down, the boot capacity increases from 505 to 1,712 liters.

In the interior of the Mazda Atenza station wagon reigns practicality and comfort. Finished in a combination of gray and black. The car offers a combination of upholstery, made of leather and velor. The chairs themselves provide a rigid fixation of the body, including cornering. This is due to the sports bias of the station wagon, which continued the beginnings of the Atenza Sport hatchback. Sporty style is emphasized by the use of leather in the finish of the steering wheel, brake lever and gear shift. All buttons necessary for driving and enabling the installed options are located within the extended arm of the driver and do not distract from the driving process. But the passenger, the left side of the dashboard is a bare plastic, which acts only as a stand or shelf. The standard set of options offered by the Mazda Atenza station wagon includes electric side mirrors, ABS, air conditioning. Xenon headlights, active head restraint, climate control, navigation system, rain sensor and auxiliary braking system are available as options. Separate trim levels come with sports seats, an ESP system and cruise control.
Mazda Atenza first-generation sedan began to be produced in 2002. The car replaced the Mazda 626 (Capella), which was discontinued the same year. In 2005, the sedan survived minor design changes that touched the front. The appearance of the fog lamps, which were designed in the same style with the main lighting, was changed. The radiator grill has become stricter and more aggressive. Two years later, the first generation was discontinued. A sedan was produced with engines of 2.0 and 2.3 liters. All cars were equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption for the Mazda Atenza sedan varies depending on the engine size and is 9.6-10.1 liters of gasoline in the city and 7.6-8.1 liters on the highway. After restyling, the gearbox was replaced by a five-speed automatic. In 2005, a rare version of the Mazdaspeed appeared, equipped with a powerful engine of 2.3 liters (272 liters. with.). She is the only sedan equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive. The trunk in it is smaller than in a regular sedan - 455 liters against 500. The appearance of the Mazdaspeed was slightly different from the restyled sedan. The body was made with the expectation of greater streamlining and improved aerodynamic effect, the front of the car was redesigned.

The chassis of all trim levels is represented by disc brakes (ventilated at the front) and independent suspension (double wishbone front and multi-link rear) with stabilizer. The dimensions of the Mazda Atenza sedan correspond to the dimensions of the hatchback and are 4670 mm long, 1780 mm wide, 1430 mm high. Ground clearance is small - 135 mm. But the interior of the Mazda Atenza sedan is spacious. Inside there is enough space for tall people, and two large people can easily fit in the back seat.

The trim is made of quality material. So, in the cabin is available combined seat upholstery. A large amount of work was carried out with the chassis of the car. The upper levers of the rear suspension were strengthened, the brake discs were increased. A new type of oil was added to the shock absorbers, the quality of which does not depend on air temperature.

The design of the front panel is ergonomic: all buttons are located close to each other and do not force you to reach them.

The basic equipment of the sedan includes power steering, height adjustment of the front seats and steering wheel, electric side mirrors. The car has mounts for child seats. As additional options, a climate control unit, air conditioning, an audio system with CD support, a navigation system with a screen and xenon headlights are offered.

Engineers paid attention to security systems by installing a sedan on the Mazda Atenza as standard, or offering the following systems as options: ABS, ESP, an auxiliary braking system and active head restraints that protect the head and neck of the driver and front passenger from sudden shocks that occur during sharp braking or collision. They provide maximum contact with the body, softening the force of the shock.

The Mazdaspeed version has sports seats with the ability to adjust their position and an engine start button.
