In 1990, Mazda began producing cars under the new Autozam brand. One of the first cars was the Mazda Autozam AZ-3, which replaced the Mazda Etude. For the first time, a car released with a rare body type kambek (Kamm tail) was introduced in 1991 at the Geneva Motor Show. Externally, the car resembles a hatchback, the upper back of which initially lowers smoothly down, but ends with a vertical cut. This version of the body provides better streamlining of the body by air currents. The rear spoiler, which became the Mazda brand name and was used on cars with sports settings and in subsequent years, for example, Mazda Atenza hatchbacks, also helps to improve aerodynamics.
The three-door car, which is sometimes referred to as a coupe, is known in different sales markets under the names Mazda AZ-3, Eunos Presso (Japan), Mazda Mx-3 Precidia (Canada) and Eunos 30X (Australia). The car was sold in many markets: Europe, North America, Japan, Australia. Some countries offered special limited series that differed in body color or interior design of the Mazda Avtozam AZ-3. It was produced with right-hand drive and most of the buyers were found in countries with left-hand traffic: Great Britain, Japan, Australia. The release continued until 1998, when it was decided to discontinue production of the model, without replacing it with a similar model in the Japanese car lineup. The dimensions of the car until 1995 were as follows: length - 4215 mm, width - 1695 mm, height - 1280 mm (GS version - 1285 mm). Then the height of the Mazda Autozam AZ-3 was increased to 1321 mm. The model has a compact interior. This is due to the shortened rear of the car, which forced to sacrifice the convenience of the rear passengers for a roomy trunk. Therefore, only children can comfortably accommodate from behind. The vehicle's ground clearance is 14 cm.

Mazda Autozam AZ-3 was produced with two types of gasoline engines: a four-cylinder, 1.5-liter, and a six-cylinder 1.8-liter engine. The car for its time was considered economical, consuming a maximum of 5.3 liters of fuel in the urban cycle (1.8 engine). One and a half liter engine consumed only 4.5 liters.

A four-speed automatic or five-speed mechanics were installed on the car. All versions of the car were front-wheel drive. Despite the low engine power, the Mazda Avtozam AZ-3 developed a speed of up to 202 km / h, and acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h in 8.4 seconds. The chassis of the car consists of suspension struts (in front of MacPherson) with stabilizers. Ventilated disc brakes are installed in front of the machine, and drum brakes are installed at the rear.

The Mazda Avtozam AZ-3 car was produced in two versions: GS and RS, which differed in carrying capacity and different years of sales in world markets. The standard set of options offered to customers includes a power steering, power side mirrors, height adjustment of the steering wheel, power windows. For entertainment, the driver and passengers are offered a cassette player and radio.

To ensure safety in a lateral collision, stiffeners are installed in the doors. To protect the driver, an airbag is provided. As options for the Mazda Avtozam AZ-3, mounts for child seats, leather front seats and climate control are installed.
