In October 2003, sales of the third-generation Mazda AZ-Wagon started. The car, which is traditionally called key-car in Japan, replaced the second generation, produced in 1999-2003. Mazda is positioned as a minivan, assembled by agreement with Suzuki, with minor design changes compared to the original Suzuki Wagon R. So, the Mazda AZ-Wagon changed the grille. In 2005 there was a planned restyling of the model, as a result of which the exterior has changed slightly. The radiator grille has changed, the taillights are made in red and white colors, and the dual headlights were combined together. The environmental friendliness of engines has also been improved. In August 2008, the production of the car was stopped, and a month later the sales of the next generation of compact city car started. In terms of size, the key car belongs to the A-class. The large height of the car provides an unusual vertical shape of the trunk. Therefore, most of the length of the car falls on the interior, which is not inferior in capacity to some mid-size sedans and hatchbacks. In the cabin there is enough space for landing of four people, even tall. Even the rear passengers have enough legroom. The length of the Mazda AZ-Wagon is 3395 mm, the width is 1475 mm. The height of the minivan varies between 1635 - 1655 mm. Ground clearance - 145 mm. The car is suitable exclusively for trips around the city - a small motor power complicates trips on country roads, even for versions with all-wheel drive.

The size of the trunk can increase due to the folded seats of the second row. They add up separately. If necessary, the rear row of seats can be completely dismantled, adapting the car to transport goods.

On the Mazda AZ-Wagon, only low-power 0.7-liter gasoline engines with 54, 60 and 64 horsepower are installed. A small engine allowed to reduce the fuel tank, designed for only 30 liters of fuel. The 54-horsepower engine consumes 4.3 liters of fuel in the combined cycle, the 60-horsepower - 4.7 liters, and the 64-horsepower on all-wheel drive - 5.7 liters. Two types of gearbox were installed on the minivan: a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive modifications were produced. The brakes on the machine were installed disc front and drum rear. The suspension consists of a MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar in front and a multi-link suspension of the dependent type at the rear. Mazda AZ-Wagon was produced in several trim levels: FS, FT, FA, FX and PR, which differed in the set of offered options and cost. The basic equipment of the Mazda AZ-Wagon included a power steering, ultraviolet protection on the car windows, a tachometer, a rear wiper for cleaning the rear window, power windows, a central lock, and fasteners for child seats. The steering wheel can be adjusted in height. Safety for the driver and passenger is ensured by front airbags. From a side impact Mazda AZ-Wagon is protected by door strength amplifiers. Rear passengers can count on the help of three-point seat belts with tensioners. To help prevent a collision, driver assistance systems built into the car will help, including anti-lock braking system (ABS). Options include 14-inch wheels, power side mirrors, xenon and front fog lights, a CD player and climate control.
