In 1997, sales of the sixth generation Mazda Capella began. In this generation, the release of wagons was again established. For them, a separate modified GW platform was proposed. Release of the station wagon for the Japanese automobile market started in 1997 and continued until 2002, when it was decided to stop production of all Mazda Capella modifications, replacing it in the Japanese market with the more modern Mazda Atenza (right-hand drive analogue of the Mazda 6 sold in Europe). In 1999, there was a restyling, during which the car received a new radiator grille, which became a brand name for Mazda cars in the 21st century. On the car installed new headlights, introduced a new bumper.

To increase the legroom for the rear passengers, they are equipped with special skids that allow them to move. If necessary, they can be removed from the passenger compartment. The back door is equipped with a drop-down window, which can be useful when transporting large items.

In this generation, they decided to abandon diesel engines, because all engines ran on gasoline, consuming 6.9 - 10.3 liters of fuel in the combined cycle. The gas tank of the car is 60 liters.

Modifications were produced with a four-speed automatic gearbox and five-speed mechanics (available only with 1.8 motors). Modifications were produced with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive was not available for cars with a 125-horsepower engine.

Car suspension - suspension struts. Modifications with a 1.8-liter engine were considered budgetary, because drum brakes were installed on them instead of disc brakes used on other versions of the station wagon. The front brakes on all vehicles are ventilated disc brakes.

Mazda Capella station wagon was produced in the trim levels of SV, SE, SX, SX Sport II, S-RX, V-RX and V-RX Sport. The basic equipment of the SV includes anti-UV glass, a rear spoiler, power steering, front seat height adjustment and power windows. When restyling, new pedals were installed in the car and the engines were modernized. The car was sold in the domestic Japanese market and delivered in large volumes abroad. In European and American markets, the car was also produced under the name Mazda 626.

The front or four-wheel drive was installed on the Chapel (only on two-liter engines). On cars, a four-speed automatic transmission and five-speed mechanics were offered. The fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 6.7 - 8.6 liters, depending on the power and volume of the engine. When driving at a speed of 60 km / h, the flow rate is 3.3 - 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
