In the past, the appearance of the Carol, which has a Suzuki Alto chassis but a bodywork directly from Mazda, was completely original. However, due to a change in Japanese standards for light subcompact cars in 1998, Mazda began to produce all its compact models together with other automakers. As a result, the new generation Carol is an almost complete copy of the fifth generation Suzuki Alto, but still has one main difference - the “face” characteristic of Mazda models due to the original pentagonal radiator grille. If the external differences of Carol from Alto are practically insignificant, then in terms of a variety of modifications and configurations, the “clone” from Mazda does not look so rich. For example, there are no double options and extremely simple modifications, as Alto offers. The Carol lineup opens with the SG version offering air conditioning, radio, and, optionally, alloy wheels, wood trim, etc. After restyling, the simplest version received the SX index, the list of its standard equipment included a radio, power accessories, and the options include a rear spoiler, front skirt, rear wiper. The rest of the trim levels with different equipment options are actually combined under the name MeLady, where MeLady Extra offers the top level of equipment - and these are standard fog lights, electric power steering, improved trim materials, including velor seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, etc. d.

Another significant difference from Alto is in engines. Three engines out of five intended for the base Suzuki model were installed on the Mazda Carol. This is a 12-valve SOHC F6A engine with a capacity of 657 cm3 and 46 horsepower. In addition to it - a 12-valve DOHC, running on lean mixtures and with ultra-low emissions, 54 hp. As well as a 12-valve motor with a 55 hp VVT phase change system Mazda Carol was offered in combination with the "mechanics" and "automatic", including all-wheel drive versions. MeLady-L modifications were produced with a front-wheel drive variator.

The Mazda Carol undercarriage combines a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion rear suspension. To ensure safety requirements, the external dimensions were slightly increased, which led to the expansion of the internal space. In addition, despite the fact that the dimensions have become larger, the car retains a small turning radius. For ease of landing and disembarkation, the seats were raised and the thresholds lowered.

Among the safety systems, the Mazda Carol equipment includes stiffeners in the doors, three-point seat belts with a force limiter, child seat fasteners, an unfastened seat belt warning lamp, and an additional brake light. A fairly wide list of options made it possible to equip the car with modern safety features: driver and passenger airbags, ABS, EBD, BAS systems. The specified equipment was the standard for MeLady trim levels, and since 2002, side airbags have also been optionally offered for expensive trim levels.

Mazda Carol is an attractive subcompact hatchback with fuel-efficient engines and good equipment, especially in top-end trim levels. However, the car also has disadvantages. In terms of convenience and comfort, this is, for example, a tight back row, and with the inseparable back of the rear seat, the opportunity for simultaneous transportation of cargo and passengers is reduced. However, in constant trips around the city, the car wins due to low fuel consumption, maneuverability and compact size.
