Familia is a car that for a long period of time has been the most popular model of the Mazda concern. However, this ninth generation was the last named Familia, if you count the cars of its own design, since Familia Van and Familia Business Wagon station wagons produced since 1999 are an OEM product together with Nissan. The 1998-2003 Mazda Familia generation (classified as BJ) in the domestic Japanese market is represented by a sedan, as well as a five-door S-Wagon hatchback, which is actually only classified by a hatchback. Although even the name makes it clear that this is a real wagon. In design and in terms of practicality, it is one of the best representatives of its class, and in addition to everything, it offers an interesting transformer salon that is ideal for traveling: the back of the front passenger seat reclines to form a table, and the rear row moving on a slide has separate backs, tilting both forward and backward and folded to form a flat floor. The ES sedan in the simplest configuration, offered on the domestic market for less than 1 million yen, offered a power steering, a tilt-adjustable steering column, a radio, and options included front fog lights, a front spoiler, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. A higher level of equipment was offered by the JS equipment: CD player, manual air conditioning, power windows, central locking. Since 2002, simple configurations have ceased to be produced at all, in favor of the more expensive LS version, which relied on a refined interior with wood accents and more options. With the top-end Sport 20 equipment (only with a two-liter engine), it was possible to get combined upholstery, an electric sunroof, a CD / DVD changer for 6 discs, climate control, xenon headlights, a rear spoiler, casting on 16 ". A more practical station wagon S-Wagon was positioned above the sedan and was offered at a price of 1,360 thousand yen for the simplest version in the S configuration, not to mention the top configuration of the Sport 20, which cost almost 2.2 million yen.

There is a fairly wide range of engines installed on Familia, ranging from 1.3-liter to 2-liter, including diesel. It can be noted that the Familia range of motors almost completely repeats the European 323rd model. However, there are differences due to the specifics of the domestic market. For example, a 1.5-liter engine with variable valve timing, which produced 130 hp, was installed on Familia. (RS grade), which is similar to the power of the 323th two-liter engine. Well, already the two-liter Familia engine in the Sport 20 configuration developed 170 forces. As in Europe, an atmospheric 70-liter diesel engine was offered. s., but the turbo engine was unavailable.

In addition, and this is another feature of the offer for the domestic market - Familia, unlike the export 323, offered modifications with permanent all-wheel drive. Moreover, for the sedan it was only a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and diesel. For the S-Wagon, the availability of 4WD was provided for all powertrains. As for the chassis, the front of the Mazda Familia has an independent suspension of the McPherson type, and the rear has a multi-link. This design provides the car with high stability and good handling. The rack and pinion steering is equipped with a power steering. On both axles - disc brakes (front ventilated). Ground clearance is 140 mm. The undercarriage as a whole is very reliable and demonstrates optimal rigidity, creating high comfort in motion.

The standard equipment of the Mazda Familia includes two front airbags, anti-lock brakes with EBD (brake force distribution) and Brake Assist (auxiliary braking) systems, three-point seat belts for all seats, front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters. Additionally, it was possible to install side airbags. Noteworthy is an improved, compared with previous models, more rigid body structure.

Among the reasons explaining why this Mazda car was in high demand in the domestic market, its attractiveness in terms of price / quality ratio and excellent roominess can be called. Despite its external simplicity, the model perfectly met the requirements for rental cars and cars intended for corporate use. The model is also popular in Russia in the secondary market - both sedans and station wagons are in demand, and well-equipped sports versions with a 170-horsepower engine may well be considered as an alternative to the “hot” models of other Japanese manufacturers.
