In March 1999, at the Tokyo Motor Show, they introduced another Mazda key car, dubbed Laputa. In the same year, the serial production of the car, which is an analogue of Suzuki Kei, began. A car was produced on the basis of an OEM agreement between the companies. Initially, the only difference from Suzuki was the nameplates, but since 2000, Laputa has received a proprietary pentagonal radiator grille. The car was available only in the Japanese market and therefore was produced only with right-hand drive. Mazda Laputa was produced in the back of a hatchback with three and five doors. After restyling in 2000, the release of three-door modifications ceased. Updating the car affected the design of the dashboard, which has become more informative. Key car production was discontinued in 2006 due to the launch of the Mazda Spiano. Mazda Laputa is a small car. It was produced with a 0.7-liter engine with a capacity of 54, 55, 60 and 64 horsepower. The last two versions of the engine are turbocharged. On versions with a 54-horsepower engine, a variable valve timing system is available. All versions of the engine worked on gasoline. The fuel consumption in the urban cycle is 5.5 - 6.0 liters of fuel. On the highway, the car consumes 3.8 - 4.1 liters of gasoline. The machine has a system for reducing emissions. All motors comply with Euro-3 standards. The volume of the fuel tank is 30 liters.

A four-speed automatic transmission or five-speed manual was installed on the Mazda Laputa. The maximum speed of the Mazda Laputa is 140 km / h. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive modifications were produced. The front suspension of the car is a MacPherson strut with a stabilizer, the rear - dependent, multi-link with a coil spring. Ahead of the machine installed disc brakes, rear - drum brakes.

The dimensions of the car were as follows: length - 3395 mm, width - 1475 mm, height - 1550 mm. The wheelbase of the car is 2360 mm. Ground clearance - 18.5 centimeters. Trunk volume - 280 liters, if necessary, it can be increased by folding the back row of seats (chairs fold separately) or completely removing it. There is enough space in the cabin to comfortably accommodate four.

Mazda Laputa hatchback was produced in E Limited, SF, XE, X, XG, X-Turbo, XE-Extra and G. trim levels. The basic equipment included electric side mirrors, power windows, mounts for child seats and a cassette player. Glasses protect against penetration of ultraviolet rays into the interior. To protect passengers and the driver, front airbags, stiffeners in the doors, seat belts with tensioners are installed. An assisted braking system (BAS) is installed to assist the driver.

Some trim levels include sports seats with height adjustment and electric heating, anti-lock braking system (ABS), air conditioning, a CD player with speakers and front fog lights.
