In 1998, the production of the second generation of the Mazda Roadster sports convertible, which received the NB index, began. In 2000, there was a restyling, as a result of which the front of the car changed and the driving characteristics of the Mazda Roadster were improved. Compared to the first generation, the Mazda Roadster convertible received a new front bumper, because of the introduction of new safety rules, lifting front headlights disappeared, the design of the taillights changed. Changes have also taken place under the hood. They began to install more powerful versions of gasoline engines. Initially, three engine versions were available: 1.6 L (120 and 125 HP) and 1.8 L (145 HP). After restyling, 1.8-liter engines with a capacity of 154 and 160 hp appeared. Fuel consumption is 6.8 - 8.8 liters of fuel. The fuel tank has a capacity of 48 liters.

In 2004, a turbo version was introduced with a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 172 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 209 N * m. The increase in engine power occurred due to an increase in the radiator volume, which ensures the cooling of the engine as soon as possible. The clutch, drive and gear ratio of the main shaft have been improved. This ensured a better balance of the car when driving. The modernization also touched the suspension of the sports car - Bilstein shock absorbers were installed on the car. The aim of the improvements was not to increase the maximum speed, but to increase the capabilities of the machine at low speeds. The reason for this is the lack of auxiliary systems in the car such as stability control or wheel traction control. The 172-horsepower engine consumes 8.2 liters of gasoline in a combined cycle.

In the second generation, five- and six-speed manual transmissions began to be installed on the Mazda Roadster convertible, an alternative to which was a four-speed automatic. The maximum speed of the car is 208 km / h. Acceleration to hundreds from a standstill occurs in 8.4 seconds.

All versions of the Japanese car were rear-wheel drive. Suspension of the machine - double wishbone with stabilizer. In some versions, a limited slip differential was installed. Brakes - disc (front - ventilated).

The Mazda Roadster Convertible had a soft roof that can be folded directly from the driver's seat. Convertible Mazda Roadster has become even more compact: its length has decreased to 3955 mm. The width of the car is 1680 mm, the height is 1235 mm. Space in the cabin has become much less - its length has been reduced to 865 mm, but for landing two people this is enough. The wheelbase has remained unchanged - 2265 mm. Ground clearance - 13 centimeters. For transportation of small loads, a trunk of 145 liters is provided.

Convertible Mazda Roadster was available in trim levels M, SP, SG, MV, YS, S and Turbo. The basic equipment includes power steering, sports seats, power windows, front airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with integrated EBD and air conditioning. Amplifiers of rigidity are installed in the car doors, and there are seat belts in the passenger compartment.

Other options in the database or as options included a navigation system, BOSE audio system, CD player, power mirrors and leather steering wheel braid. The convertible Mazda Roadster NB was produced until 2005. In addition to the basic version, several limited versions of the car were released, which differed in a set of options and body color: RS, VS, NR-A and 10th Anniversary (500 cars were released in 1999 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the model). The NR-A version featured larger brake discs and a reinforced motor mount.
In 2003, a coupe was added to the convertible line of the Mazda Roadster. Coupe Mazda Roadster produced a limited edition. In addition to the stationary roof, the Mazda Roadster coupe differs from the convertible coupe in a new front view and fewer available engines.
The upgrade touched the power structure of the body, which increased the rigidity and controllability of the car, and the total weight of the car grew by only 10 kilograms. The Mazda Roadster Coupe remains a two-seater. The wheelbase is 2265 mm, and the dimensions of the car have slightly increased: length - 3995 mm, width - 1680 mm, height - 1240 mm. Ground clearance - 135 mm.

Three types of engines were installed on the Mazda Roadster coupe: 1.6 liters (125 hp), 1.8 liters (154 and 160 hp). They all worked on gasoline. Fuel consumption is 8.1 - 8.9 liters in the combined cycle. The fuel tank has a capacity of 48 liters.

Three transmission options were available: four-speed automatic, five- and six-speed manual. The maximum speed of the car is 208 km / h (when accelerating to hundreds from a standstill in 8.4 seconds). All modifications coupe Mazda Roadster rear-wheel drive. Suspension - double wishbone with stabilizers and limited slip differential. Brakes - disc (front - ventilated).

The Mazda Roadster coupe was originally available in the 1600SP and 1800 Type S trim levels. A bit later, the luxury versions of Type E and Type A were introduced. Modification Type E features a new 1.8-liter engine (154 hp), an individual body color and improved trim. She was the only one issued with a gearbox automatic. 150 cars were produced.

The Type A version was distinguished by improved aerodynamics and was produced with a 1.8-liter engine producing 160 hp. It was collected 200 copies of this car. In both luxury versions, a system was established to reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The basic equipment of the Mazda Roadster coupe includes power steering, sports seats, power windows, frontal airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) complete with brake force distribution (EBD), air conditioning and electric side mirrors.

The Type S package was complemented by child seat mounts, three-point seat belts with tensioners and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In the Type E version, front fog lights, leather seats, and door stiffeners were installed. In the Type A configuration, front and rear spoilers were offered as options. The release of the first version of the Mazda Roadster coupe was discontinued in 2005.
