The Mitsubishi i hatchback was first introduced in 2004 at the Tokyo Auto Show. The car was created on the basis of another baby - Smart Fortwo. Mitsubishi i is a unique car, the feature of which is that the engine is located across the car in the area of the rear axle, which is considered to be the leading one. This layout is called MR (Middle-Rear). This arrangement of the motor led to a decrease in load capacity. Thanks to this, the car received an unusual design - it provides only a small hood, smoothly turning into a large windshield. This arrangement of the engine increased the wheelbase (up to 2550 mm) and the usable area of the cabin, the length of which is 179 cm, which allows four people to fit inside. The wheelbase of the car is 50 mm larger than that of the Mitsubishi Colt.
Mitsubishi Ai hatchback has many interesting solutions: the rear seats can be folded into a sofa, and the front ones are equipped with a 180-degree rotation function. Due to the location of the motor, the rear seats are located slightly higher, therefore, tall passengers at the rear can be uncomfortable.
Mitsubishi Ai was produced with rear or all-wheel drive. Two types of low-powered engines with a capacity of 659 cubic meters were installed on the hatchback. cm: 52 h.p. and 64 hp Therefore, the car is very economical: in the city the fuel consumption is 6.3 liters, and on the highway - 4.3. In the combined cycle, the engine consumes 4.8-5.5 liters of gasoline. The fuel tank capacity is 35 liters.
All modifications of Mitsubishi Ai were equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. High-speed performance of the car is small - only 130 km / h with a set of hundreds in 14.5 seconds. Car suspension - a combination of McPherson strut strut front and De Dion three-link rear. Hatchback disc brakes with ventilation in front and drum rear.
The dimensions of the four-door hatchback are small: length - 3395 mm, width - 1475 mm, height - 1600 mm. The clearance of the Japanese is 15 centimeters. The boot volume of the car is 120 liters. Separately folding rear seats can increase the loading area of the machine.
Mitsubishi i belongs to subcompact city cars, which in Japan are called kei cars. In addition to the basic version, limited series were also presented in Japan. The Hello Kitty version is distinguished by a pink body color with drawings and inscriptions on the body. The Play Edition was released in the amount of 3,000 copies, equipped with an iPod Nano slot on the front panel. The Kurashiki Edition (100 cars were created) featured denim upholstery. For this version, a CD player with four speakers was presented. In 2007, they introduced the 1st Anniversary Edition, dedicated to the first year of production. The release of Mitsubishi i completely stopped in 2013. This model became the prototype for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car, introduced in 2009.
The hatchback was produced in the Vivace, L, LX, S, Limited, T, M and G. trim levels. The L version includes power steering, UV protection glazing, power windows, heated front seats, front airbags, ISOFIX mounts, BAS and ABS systems, CD, -player and air conditioning with automatic control.
