3 generation
Sedan
Hatchback
The third-generation Mitsubishi Mirage appeared in 1987. The car completely changed its image; there are more undulating lines in the exterior. The design of the front end resembles its older brother - the Galant model. In addition to the three-door hatchback, Mirage since 1988 was produced in the sedan, which had an elongated 70 mm wheelbase and a more spacious interior. In foreign markets, this model was sold under the name Lancer (in the domestic market, the 5-door liftback, created on the basis of a sedan, was also called that). In the third generation, the Mirage sedan received 1.3 and 1.5 liter Orion gasoline engines and 1.6 and 1.8 liter Saturn engines.
The company offered customers different versions of the four-door model, each of which was created for its own consumer audience: utilitarian T, more advanced FABIO, top-end VIE and sports CYBORG. If the most affordable T versions could only be offered by a radio receiver, then the expensive versions ideally suited the role of a family car, having on board a full power package, a steering column adjustable in two planes, high-quality seat upholstery, a two-story cassette player with an equalizer, powerful speakers and amplifier, rear wiper, fog lights, comfortable seats with armrests, sunroof, etc. d.

The smallest third-generation Mirage sedan was content with a 67-horsepower 1.3-liter 4G13 engine or its 79-horsepower version. The main modifications were considered models with a 1.5-liter 4G15, which were able to satisfy most buyers with their characteristics (85 or 100 hp). The atmospheric 1.6-liter engine of the 4G61 series had a return of 130 hp. And the turbo "Cyborgs" return reached 160 "forces". Their DOHC 16V-T engine created a torque of 221 Nm at 2500 rpm and was able to spin up to a cut-off of 7700 rpm without special tension, giving the sedan amazing agility - it could accelerate from zero to 100 km / h in about 8 seconds In addition, a 1.8-liter 4D65 diesel engine was installed on the sedan, which produced 61-76 hp.

Mitsubishi Mirage has an independent front suspension (suspension strut type MacPherson strut) and semi-dependent or dependent on the rear. Cyborg models with a turbo engine used the world's first dual-mode suspension, which can change the characteristics of their work in order to achieve sharper handling and, as a result, a higher speed of movement. These cars were also equipped with brake discs on all four wheels (front ventilated) and were equipped with lower profile tires of size 195 / 60R14, better suited to gambling driving. Optionally, a limited slip differential with a viscous clutch could be installed. In standard trim levels, ventilated front disc brakes and rear drum brakes were installed, tires of 175 / 70R13 or 155SR13 sizes. The dimensions of the body of the sedan were: length 4235 mm (285 mm longer than the hatchback), width 1670 mm, height 1380 mm. The length of the wheelbase of the sedan was 2455 mm compared to 2385 mm for the hatchback. Accordingly, the interior was more spacious, its dimensions: 1815 x 1380 x 1155 mm. In some trim levels, the rear seat is folded in parts. Trunk volume 337 liters.

Compared to its predecessor, the third-generation Mirage has become more secure: for example, in some versions the optional anti-lock braking system was installed. The car body has zones of programmed deformation, a rear wiper was installed to improve visibility in bad weather, the front seat belts were adjustable in height, there were side three-point belts for rear passengers. Like many legendary Japanese cars that were produced during the economic “bubble”, Mirage offered numerous innovations and technologies, surprised by the variety of the model range, and therefore was very highly appreciated by customers both in Japan and abroad. Second-hand “Mirages” often act as an interesting object for tuning. If we discard the tightness of the cabin, the sophisticated tuning of the carburetor versions, everyday maintenance mainly complicates the inaccessibility of spare parts.

The design of the front end resembles its older brother - the Galant model. The main modification was a three-door hatchback, one of the characteristic features of which was a long roof and an almost vertical rear door in the style of the popular Civic. In the third generation, Mirage received 1.3 and 1.5 liter Orion gasoline engines and 1.6 and 1.8 liter Saturn engines. Apart from the most inexpensive version of “T”, which was mainly used in the commercial sector, the company offered customers four different options to choose from: SWIFT, XYVYX, FABIO and CYBORG, each of which was created for its own consumer audience. For example, Swift served the general public and was offered in many variations, including the Super Top with a removable large roof with two glass hatches. The original version was a double XYVYX, devoid of rear windows. Fabio was offered primarily for women. And at the top was a truly sports class CYBORG, which had all the necessary attributes: more powerful engines, external aerodynamic elements, sports parts in the cabin, etc.
