Hatchback
The restyling of the Mitsubishi Toppo BJ greatly simplified the appearance of the car - instead of stylish headlights, the kei-car received rather ordinary-looking optics, bumpers of a more smoothed shape and, on the whole, lost their personality. However, this did not concern equipment that has improved, including in terms of safety. The engines remain the same, with a working volume of 0.66 liters - a 3-cylinder (3G83) or 4-cylinder turbocharged (4A30), but already in August 2002 the “older” modifications were canceled as not satisfying environmental requirements and only 3 cylinder models. The most significant change in the Mitsubishi Toppo BJ cabin after restyling is the movement of the “automatic” lever to the steering column and the appearance of the foot parking brake: now nothing interferes with changing from a driver’s seat to a passenger. However, this change affected only versions with a 4-speed AT, and for Toppo BJ with a 3-speed “automatic” or with “mechanics”, the gearshift lever and “handbrake” remained on the floor. The interior has been updated in some small details, new finishes have appeared, etc. In the most utilitarian version of Toppo BJ 2001-2003, there is only air conditioning and a radio, in models more expensive there are foglights and a rear wiper, alloy wheels, power windows and a central lock, CD / MD player.

The Mitsubishi Toppo BJ after restyling remains the same power units. This is a 3-cylinder 12-valve SOHC engine with a return of 50 “forces” (62 Nm); 4-cylinder 16-valve SOHC or 20-valve DOHC turbocharged engine with 60 hp (83 Nm) and 64 h.p. (100 Nm). Drive - front or 4WD Easy Select system. The gearbox is 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic, but the most inexpensive commercial versions of the U type were equipped with mechanics or a 3-speed “automatic”. After a partial modernization in October 2001, the Toppo BJ with the 3G83 engine was certified as a G-LEV, and after the cancellation of the 4A30 engine in September 2002, the three-cylinder models remained the only offer.

By design, the chassis of the Mitsubishi Toppo BJ looks pretty simple. It has a front independent suspension (MacPherson strut) and a dependent rear axle on trailing arms. Brakes - disc front and drum rear. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster, which is standard on all models. Depending on the purpose and configuration, the car received aluminum or steel stamped rims 13 or 14 inches in size. The wheelbase of Toppo BJ is 2340 mm, and the turning radius is 4.4 m. By its dimensions, the car fits into the requirements for key cars: its length is 3395 mm, width 1475 mm. The height is quite decent and is 1680-1695 mm. Interior dimensions Toppo BJ after restyling: 1735 x 1220 x 1420 mm. As before, the car is available in commercial and passenger versions. It is very simple to determine the difference - in utilitarian models there is a bench-type seat at the back, and the passenger backs are divided (50:50).

The improvement of the Mitsubishi Toppo BJ also affected safety. All trim levels now have two airbags as standard (except for the base U, where there is only a driver's airbag). An anti-lock braking system was an option or was a standard part of more expensive modifications (Z and higher), together with a brake force distribution system and a brake assist system.

Mitsubishi Toppo BJ is one of the most interesting Japanese key cars. Manufacturers usually try to “tailor” these cars in such a way as to make them as spacious as possible, and in the case of Toppo BJ it turned out very well. The car is unpretentious, economical (if you drive in a relaxed manner). But the 3-cylinder engine is weak, the rarity of the machine creates problems with the search for spare parts. Toppo BJ was produced until 2003. For some time in the company's lineup there were no Tall Wagon models with a body height of more than 1550 mm. The actual successor to the Toppo BJ only appeared in 2008 - it was “just” the Mitsubishi Toppo, which is considered the fourth generation of cars with the same name (starting with the 1990 Minica Toppo).
