The origin of the Subaru Impreza is associated with the rally cars that took part in the World Rally. In the second generation, the main changes were aimed at achieving better handling with slight increase in size. The Impreza is considered a car with "character" and its success story has much to do with not only the all-wheel drive, but also the powerful turbocharged boxer engines that give this car an unrivaled driving experience. One of the modifications was developed by the STI division (Subaru Tecnica International), which deals with sports projects. Under the hood of the high-performance Subaru Impreza WRX STI is a 265-horsepower engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
Sedan Subaru Impreza 2. 0 WRX STI for Europe is characterized by increased attention to sporty details compared to conventional Imprezas: aluminum pedals, leather braided handbrake lever, gearshift knob and steering wheel; the car has a Momo sports steering wheel, bucket seats with two-tone trim. Mandatory for this rich sports version are: an aerodynamic body kit, spotlights, a two-din radio, an electric driver's seat. A special version of the Prodrive Style was also offered on the European market, which was released in a limited edition of 1000 copies worldwide. This model is distinguished by a powerful rear wing, special front bumper, grille, foglights and side skirts, a blue speedometer with red arrows. If we talk about one of the most powerful representatives of the horizontally opposed engine family available for the European Subaru Impreza 2000-2002, then the 2.0 WRX STI has a four-cylinder turbo engine under the hood, bearing the designation EJ207, equipped with active valve control systems (AVCS) and a turbocharger with electronic regulation of boost pressure. It works in combination with a sporty 6-speed manual transmission with close gear ratios. This power unit produces 195 kW (265 hp), complies with the Euro 3 standard and is tuned to the 98th petrol, which has a combined cycle consumption of 12.1 l / 100 km. With this engine, the sedan accelerates in just 5.5 seconds to "hundreds", and the maximum speed is 238 km / h.

In the chassis of the Subaru Impreza, for the first time, "inverted" type shock absorbers (a technical solution from the world of motorsport) are used. They have less unsprung masses, so the suspension has become a little more comfortable and the car holds the road better in corners. In addition, the car received a hood made of light alloy. Equipped with light-alloy wheels 7.5x17 and wide tires with a low profile - 225/45 R17, which guarantee increased traction. Among other things, it is noted that the European Impreza WRX STI, in comparison, for example, with the American version, have a more powerful braking system with four-piston fixed calipers on the front axle and two-piston fixed on the rear. The model also features limited slip differentials on both axles.

Full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) guarantees optimum traction and increased safety when driving on any road surface. The safety concept of the Impreza WRX STI is also set by the sporty ABS with electronic brake force distribution. The car was equipped with two frontal airbags. What is missing is the side airbags, which were offered as an option on the WRX STI.

The second generation Subaru Impreza is one of the most interesting models on the market with a distinctly sporty character, especially when it comes to the WRX STI version. This car has received special recognition among the public, professing an active driving style. When purchasing this car, you need to come to terms with such disadvantages as stiff suspension, low ground clearance, high consumption and tax, expensive maintenance.
The long-awaited second generation Impreza by STi was unveiled in October 2000. Influenced by the World Rally Championship, all attention was focused on the Impreza WRX STi sedan, but a similar tuning version of the station wagon was prepared. The machine was powered by a 280-horsepower EJ20 series horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine in combination with a 6-speed manual transmission with close gear ratios. The all-wheel drive system included a center differential and a limited slip differential viscous coupling. The modification with 16-inch wheels received a center differential, controlled by the driver. Just like the WRX STi sedan, the station wagon was fitted with a large intercooler, independent suspension and Brembo brakes. (October 2000)
Instead of the previous trim, the radiator grille is now adorned with the Subaru logo (six stars). The STi logo appears on the side of the grille, and the fog lamp caps are now in cherry red. The "Pro Drive Style" version has been prepared with a special design of the aerodynamic body kit. (September 2001)
