Another partial update was made to the Subaru Impreza in 2005. Cars of the Impreza family have not been subjected to such a radical restyling for a long time. The new design of the front end of the body was developed by the Greek designer Andreas Zapatinas, who previously worked at Alfa Romeo. The Impreza received original headlights, a complex-shaped radiator grille in the style of "spread wings" and a new front bumper. In addition, the shape of the hood and interior trim have undergone changes. The most powerful WRX STI in Europe is now on par with the Japanese version with a 2.5-liter 280-horsepower turbocharged boxer engine.
As usual, the WRX STI sedan differs from the WRX model in a number of special details: an enlarged air intake on the hood, "gold" discs and Brembo braking system, a powerful rear wing. An aerodynamic element (optional STI wing) has been added to the rear of the roof. Of great interest are the special editions of the WRX STI that were offered in Europe. For example, in 2006, a special version of the WRX STi Limited was presented in Germany: with anthracite wheels, round foglights, the car looks more harmonious outwardly due to a reduced rear spoiler and the absence of an additional roof spoiler; the interior is distinguished by additional noise insulation and black leather trim. Almost similar editions were sold in Switzerland and France under the names WRX STi Type G and WRX STi Club. Exclusive to the UK, the WRX STi RB320 commemorates racing driver Richard Burns and boosted engine output to 320 hp, supplied with custom 18-inch alloy wheels, custom-designed Prodrive suspension, sport spring kit and stabilizers, reduced ground clearance (by 30 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear). In the European version of the 2006 Impreza WRX STI model, the previous 2.0-liter turbo engine has been replaced by a unit with a displacement increased to 2.5 liters. The perfectly balanced DOHC SUBARU BOXER engine, equipped with variable valve control and boost pressure control, is now even more powerful. It also meets the stricter Euro 4 emission standard. Power output reaches 280 hp. (206 kW), thrust indicator - 392 Nm (the previous version had 265 HP and 343 Nm). The engine, mated to a sporty 6-speed manual transmission with close gear ratios, allows the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.4 seconds. The maximum speed is 255 km / h. But in the limited edition WRX STI RB320, a special Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP) increased engine power to 320 hp and torque to 450 Nm. This Impreza can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds.
The chassis of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI uses inverted shock absorbers (a technical solution from the world of motorsport). In the current generation, the Impreza has received a stiffer body shell, measures have been taken to further reduce weight, while the hood of all WRXs is made of light alloy. But the special versions of the WRX STI, essentially rally cars, feature even more drastic weight-loss measures. In addition, these vehicles have a modified chassis and steering. The car is standardly equipped with wide low-profile tires - 225/45 R17, which guarantee increased traction. To ensure the exceptional sporting qualities of the 2005-2007 WRX STI, there is also an advanced symmetrical all-wheel drive system, a controlled center differential (DCCD), limited slip differentials on both axles. The standard equipment of the Subaru Impreza includes two front and two side airbags (in the STI modification, side airbags are optional), stiffeners in the doors, three-point seat belts with pretensioners and tension limiters. Electronic systems - anti-lock braking, brake force distribution and brake assist - are responsible for active control. The vehicle has a robust body with comprehensive impact protection.
The second generation Subaru Impreza is one of the most interesting models on the market with a distinctly sporty character, especially when it comes to the WRX STI version. This car has received special recognition among the public, professing an active driving style. When purchasing this car, you need to come to terms with such disadvantages as stiff suspension, low ground clearance, high consumption and tax, expensive maintenance.
