The restyling of the second generation Subaru Impreza introduced the most noticeable aesthetic change in the car's appearance - round headlights are a thing of the past and are replaced by more elongated ones. The front part was also updated: new bumper, grille, foglights. The rear of the car has been slightly updated, where new lights have appeared. Subaru Impreza continued to produce sedan and station wagon bodies. The sports models WRX and WRX STI, equipped with high-performance turbocharged engines, continue to occupy a special position in the lineup. However, inexpensive Imprezas with conventional atmospheric engines, which in European countries were offered in versions with 1.6 and 2.0 liter engines, were also very popular. The basic equipment of the most affordable version of the Impreza 1.6 TS station wagon includes 14-inch steel wheels, heated exterior mirrors with electrically adjustable body-colored bodies, roof rails, front and rear power windows, central locking, adjustable steering wheel, radio preparation (speakers and antenna). The car has vanity mirrors in sun visors, a variety of storage compartments, including a built-in storage in the center console, cup holders, pockets, etc. The rear seat backrest folds in parts (60:40). The expensive version of the 2.0 GX station wagon has fog lights, 15-inch aluminum rims, a remote control key, an immobilizer, a delayed interior lighting function, a semi-automatic air conditioning with a cabin filter and much more. The most popular modification of the 2002-2005 Subaru Impreza station wagon was considered the version with a 2-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated boxer engine with a capacity of 92 kW, or 125 hp. (184 Nm). This engine can be mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. In terms of performance, of course, it falls short of the version of the Impreza 2.0 WRX station wagon, whose performance was raised to 225 hp. (6.5 seconds - 0-100 km / h), but was able to accelerate the "five-door" from zero to "hundred" in 10.2 seconds and to a maximum of 188 km / h (with "mechanics"). Alternatively, Motor 1 was available for the Impreza station wagon. 6 with a power of 70 kW (95 hp, 143 Nm) with a five-speed manual transmission. But here the dynamics are worse - almost 13 seconds to "hundreds" and the maximum 171 km / h. And fuel consumption (8.2 l / 100 km) is not much less than that of a more powerful model (8.6-8.9 l / 100 km).

The fully independent suspension of the Subaru Impreza has been designed as well as possible and provides excellent driving characteristics and excellent handling. The car has sufficient ground clearance - 150 mm. Station wagon models with a manual transmission are equipped with a dual-range gearbox. The 2.0 GX trim level is equipped with disc brakes on both axles and a Hill-Holder anti-rollback system (on vehicles with "mechanics"). In the current generation, measures have been taken to further reduce weight, and the body frame has been reinforced. The wheelbase in this generation is 2525 mm. The turning circle is 10.4 meters. The trunk volume of the station wagon is 356 liters according to the VDA standard, with the seats folded down, it increases to 1266 liters.

After restyling, standard 2003 Subaru Impreza safety features include anti-lock braking systems with brake force distribution and brake assist; front and side airbags for the driver and passenger, three-point belts in all seats, active head restraints for the front seats, Isofix mounts for child seats, a safety pedal assembly. The body provides excellent protection for the driver and passengers, earning high marks for passive safety. Another feature of the Subaru Impreza can also be noted - the horizontally opposed engine provides a very low center of gravity of the car, which has a positive effect on handling and stability at high speeds. The second generation Subaru Impreza is one of the most interesting models on the market with a pronounced sporty character, especially in specially prepared versions: for speed lovers, the WRX and WRX STI models should be of greatest interest in this generation. But even ordinary Impreza have quite efficient motors and permanent all-wheel drive, which not every representative of this class can boast of. Disadvantages are mainly associated with a cramped cabin, poor corrosion protection, specific servicing of boxer engines, and high cost of spare parts.
