The Suzuki Cultus, which appeared in 1983, was the first Suzuki with larger dimensions than the Fronte kei and its derivatives. It was originally presented in a three-door hatchback body and was the main link in the 1.0-liter class, but soon 1.3-liter versions appeared, including GTI models, as well as modifications in the 5-door version were released. The car became very popular outside of Japan, where it was known under the name Swift, as well as the Chevrolet Sprint and Pontiac Firefly. The second generation Cultus began production in 1988. The car has increased in size, and the wheelbase has grown from 2245 to 2265 mm. In addition, in addition to the hatchback, the second generation of the model was now produced in a sedan (Cultus Esteem).
If we talk about the 1988 Suzuki Cultus hatchback, then this car was presented both in low-cost trim levels like the basic version of Eleny, and in high-performance models 1. 3 GTI, suggesting a higher level of equipment: the standard equipment included fog lights, aerodynamic parts of external tuning, aluminum wheels, and air conditioning as an option. Compared with the previous model, the front panel of the Suzuki Cultus has less rough forms, but in general the interior looks more ordinary. But the exterior is quite elegant and American-style. In the second generation, Cultus improved its qualities as a compact car, became more comfortable and more spacious inside, and an unusually sunny interior with large glazing in combination with six large side windows became unique for the five-door version of the car.

The hatchback Suzuki Cultus 1988-1991 was equipped with the following engines. The base G10 - a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder SOHC - delivered a maximum of 58 horsepower. Another option, the G13 4-cylinder engine, in turn, had different designs: SOHC with a return of 73 “forces”, SOHC 16V (82 hp) and DOHC 16V (115 hp). At the same time, the most powerful version of the GTI hatchback with a 1.3 DOHC engine was only a 3-door with a standard aero body kit. Most of the Cultus modifications were front-wheel drive, but modifications were also made with permanent all-wheel drive (except for 1.0 L). Transmission - 5-speed manual or 3-band automatic. Depending on the engine and transmission, Suzuki Cultus used between 5.5 and 9.4 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

Unusually for its class, the Suzuki Cultus undercarriage includes a fully independent suspension of all wheels (rack-and-pinion type), which gives the car excellent driving characteristics. Power steering, and the braking system included disk mechanisms on the front axle and drum mechanisms on the rear, or fully disk mechanisms on GTI models. The dimensions of the Suzuki Cultus hatchback are quite compact: length 3710-3810 mm, width 1575-1590 mm, height 1350-1380 mm. The wheelbase is 2265 mm, the turning radius is relatively small - 4.6-4.8 m. Interior dimensions: 1645 x 1300 x 1110 mm. The luggage compartment of the hatchback is modest in size, with a large loading height. The rear seat folds in whole or in part.

With safety, the affairs of the Suzuki Cultus release 1988-1991 are as usual in those years in cars of this class. The hatchback is equipped with three-point seat belts (the front ones are height-adjustable, a waist belt was used for the rear central passenger), “child” locks in the rear doors, the body has programmed deformation zones and is equipped with built-in side impact protection.

In the Suzuki series, the Cultus was a global strategic model. And was focused on a wide range of consumers. Its compactness and economy, unpretentious, but thoughtful interior created all conditions for simple operation. Cons - cramped interior, weak stove, possible difficulties with spare parts.
The second generation Suzuki Cultus was launched in 1988. In addition to the hatchback, the car was now also offered in a sedan, which received the separate name Cultus Esteem (in translation - respect, reverence). The three-volume version differed from the hatchback not only by the longer body length due to the increased trunk, but also by the fact that in addition to the 1.3-liter unit, which was familiar from the hatchback, a 1.6-liter engine could be installed under the hood. The power of the Cultus Esteem sedan was 73 or 100 horsepower, respectively, while with a 1.6-liter engine it was possible all-wheel drive.
The range of the Cultus Esteem 1989-1991 sedan included four trim levels. The basic version of the XL had an adjustable steering column, folding rear seats, a radio, air conditioning, aluminum wheels, a rear spoiler were installed for a fee. The XS version was distinguished by electric mirrors and power windows, and the XE model - a tachometer in the dashboard, rear fog lights. The top model XG was standardly equipped with a cassette player with 4 speakers, adjustable driver's seat height. Inside and out, the Suzuki Cultus Esteem looks quite simple, in the mundane style of the 80-90s Suzuki cars. But the special Hiroko Koshino Limited sedan series (with a 1.3-liter engine) launched in 1990 differed in various design refinements from the famous Japanese fashion designer and included a special front grille and disc caps, specially designed leather seats and other details.  Cultus Esteem sedan was equipped with two types of engines. The base G13 - a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder SOHC - delivered a maximum of 73 horsepower. A more powerful option, the 1.6-liter SOHC 16V G16 series, had a capacity of 100 horsepower. Most modifications of the Cultus Esteem were front-wheel drive, but in the top version, the option with permanent all-wheel drive was possible. Transmission - 5-speed manual or 3-band automatic. Depending on the engine and transmission, Suzuki Cultus Esteem consumed between 5.6 and 7.8 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

Unusual for its class, the Suzuki Cultus Esteem undercarriage includes a fully independent all-wheel suspension (post-lever type), which gives the car excellent driving characteristics. Power steering, and the braking system included disk mechanisms on the front axle and drum mechanisms on the rear. The dimensions of the sedan are quite compact for a three-volume: length 4075 mm, width 1600 mm, height 1380 mm. The wheelbase is 2265 mm, the turning radius is relatively small - 4.8 m. Interior dimensions: 1765 x 1295 x 1140 mm. Advertising catalogs indicated that two large suitcases freely entered the trunk of the sedan, and the separately folding rear seats made it easy to increase the volume for luggage and carry long items. With safety, things at the Suzuki Cultus Esteem release 1988-1991 are as usual in those years with cars of this class. The sedan is equipped with three-point seat belts (the front ones are height-adjustable, a waist belt was used for the rear central passenger), “child” locks in the rear doors, the body has programmed deformation zones and is equipped with built-in side impact protection. In the Suzuki series, the Cultus was a global strategic model. And was focused on a wide range of consumers. Its compactness and economy, unpretentious, but thoughtful interior created all conditions for simple operation. Cons - cramped interior, weak stove, possible difficulties with spare parts.
