The second generation Suzuki Escudo began to be produced in 1997. Despite the fact that this car is an urban crossover, it has the "stuffing" of a real SUV. Like the previous generation, Escudo is equipped with all-wheel drive, which creates a full-fledged image of a small, but off-road car. The exterior design of this generation compared to the previous one has become less angular - in fact, the exterior design of Escudo, replete with smooth rounded shapes, and the original design of the front end is more associated with the American than with the Japanese market. At the same time, the car retained all those features and proportions that are responsible for easy recognition. Still the undisputed advantages of the car are compactness, maneuverability, low price and practicality.
Many modifications of Escudo favorably influenced its popularity. The car was offered in 3- and 5-door versions with automatic or manual gearbox. The interior is quite simple and unpretentious, except that in the more expensive versions you can find trim panels "wood", improved seat upholstery and other options not available for standard versions. For example, the special “G limited” series, which has been produced since 1998, provides for the presence of an original plastic body kit, a radiator grill, spoilers, two-tone color - all this gives the car not only a sporty, but also a more aggressive, solid look. In addition, cars of this series are equipped with fog lights, heated rear-view mirrors, a leather-wrapped braid of the steering wheel and gear knob, and a set of additional traveler's devices (outside temperature sensor, clock, compass). Access to the trunk is through a side door that opens to the side. The spare tire is customarily installed on it. The rear seats fold up easily and form a level floor. At first, the car was equipped with only a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder SOHC engine with 107 horsepower and a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC engine with 140 hp. Note the good reliability and unpretentiousness of these common powertrains. A bit later, a 2-liter diesel engine and a V-shaped 6-cylinder DOHC engine with a volume of 2.5 liters with a capacity of 92 and 160 horsepower, respectively, were added. With the latest Escudo engine, decent power and dynamics are provided.

The second-generation Suzuki Escudo is equipped with a front suspension with suspension struts, the rear axle is equipped with a continuous axle on springs with anti-roll bars. Thanks to this design, the car has excellent driving characteristics and high operational capabilities in poor road conditions. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed "automatic". Note the maneuverability of the model - the minimum turning radius is 5.3 meters. Unlike many compact SUVs, the engine in the Escudo is located “classically” - longitudinally, and the main drive axle is the rear. This design allows you to more optimally distribute the weight between the axles, this weight distribution, in turn, favorably affects the improvement of patency. In difficult road conditions, you can use all-wheel drive with a rigidly connected front axle.

Not bad prepared by Escudo and in terms of security. The car has a ruggedized body, stiffening amplifiers in the doors. Antilock braking system, two airbags (driver and front passenger) were initially offered as an option or as equipment of expensive trim levels. For cars of later years of production, such a set has become standard, as well as the presence of child seat mounts, three-point seat belts in all places. Since 2000, the list has also been supplemented with a brake force distribution system (EBD).

Suzuki Escudo model 1997 model year are very diverse: in terms of prices, technical stuffing and condition. As a rule, these are cars with 1.6 and 2.0 liter engines - the vast majority of the supply on the market falls on them, and almost equally. But Escudo with a 2.5-liter engine, although they are less common, but look more advantageous due to a much larger power reserve, and the prices for this version differ not so much.
