SUV
Grand Escudo is an SUV designed primarily for foreign markets. Its high capabilities were appreciated in America. It was released at the end of 2000. As the name of the car, this is a "big Escudo." Compared with the 5-door version of the regular Escudo / Vitara, the body length of this car is increased by 485 mm, and the interior is equipped with an additional third row of seats, thereby providing 7 seats. The car also has an alternative name Suzuki XL7, under which, in fact, it was offered in some markets, including the North American. Here, the XL in the title also indicates a large size, and the number 7 indicates the number of seats. The undeniable advantage of the car was the low price, making this SUV one of the most affordable cars with three rows of seats.
In the domestic Japanese market, Grand Escudo was supposed to cover the need for SUVs that combine a balance between ride comfort and spacious interior space. In December 2000, the basic 7-seat model was released with a 2-3-2 seat arrangement and a retractable (90 mm) mechanism for second-row seats. The chairs of the third row are easily adjustable. In June of next year, only the 5-seater version of Helly Hansen Limited was released, where due to the lack of a third row of seats, customers received increased luggage space. This special equipment was equipped with exclusive seat upholstery, body-colored bumpers, the Helly Hansen logo printed on the spare wheel cover, black leather steering wheel braid, and special floor mats to prevent dirt or water from entering the floor. Other special editions were issued, including versions with a leather interior and a more elegant interior decoration.

Of course, the main issue for equipping the car with an engine of a certain power was the increased weight - it amounted to 1.6 tons (200 kg more than the 2.5-liter 5-door version of the standard Escudo). To somehow compensate for this, the Grand Escudo installed a new V-shaped 6-cylinder DOHC engine of 2.7 liters. This motor not only surpassed the already mentioned 2.5-liter in power (177 hp vs. 160), but also in such an indicator as torque - 242 Nm against 221. In addition, with this engine, the Grand Escudo fell into the group vehicles with ultra low exhaust emissions (E-LEV). And since 2003, engine power has been raised to 184 hp.

The 4WD Part Time drive of the Drive Select series allows you to use different modes: 2H (rear-wheel drive, high speed), 4H (all-wheel drive, high speed), 4L (all-wheel drive, low speed), which allows you to fully use the off-road ability of the car . In addition, you can switch to 2WD and 4WD while driving with the dial switch located on the center panel. The wheelbase of the Grand Escudo is 320 mm larger than that of the Escudo, due to which the car has excellent stability during movement.

The safety equipment includes front airbags (driver and front passenger), anti-lock brakes ABS with brake force distribution (EBD), and seat belts with a force limiter (front with tensioners) as standard equipment. child seats, stiffeners in the doors. Suzuki Grand Escudo is of considerable interest and is a valuable find as a relatively inexpensive SUV that can accommodate a large number of passengers. At the same time, car prices are really quite adequate, although it is more difficult to find this right-hand drive version than the regular Escudo, since it is less common on the market.
