Suzuki Kei appeared in 1998. Initially, it was produced in a three-door body, but this option did not find a significant response from buyers. With the advent of the five-door model in 1999, the popularity of Kei began to grow rapidly and soon this mini-car was produced only in this version. He went through restyling and got a modified appearance: the changes affected the front end - new headlights and a bumper, a different grille design. The company offered new sports designs: Kei Sport and Kei Sport R, and the most advanced Kei Works. The presence of a special design for each 64-horsepower turbo engine under the hood, a specially tuned suspension, Recaro seats makes them very worthy of attention. Conventional Kei reappeared an atmospheric unit, while more powerful versions are equipped with a 60-horsepower turbocharged engine.
Speaking about the special performances of Suzuki Kei, one cannot fail to note the appearance of such a version as FIS Freestyle, which was dedicated to the Freestyle World Cup, where Suzuki acted as the main sponsor. This version was distinguished by large fog lights, silver roof rails, mirror housings and wheel arch frames, upholstered blue seats and the same color with fabric inserts on the doors, as well as a standard MD / CD player. In December of the same 2000, the 21st Century Special EX series was launched to mark the new century - this model had numerous options for more expensive trim levels, but was sold at a very affordable price. With another update in 2001, Suzuki Kei received a new front panel: its functionality has improved, and the head unit or navigation system now occupy the top position.

For Suzuki Kei 2000-2006, 3-cylinder engines with a displacement of 0.7 liters were offered. In basic versions with an atmospheric engine with a power of 54-55 hp VVT variable valve timing system used. More powerful options include a 6-valve SOHC with a turbocharger and 60 horsepower, as well as 12-valve DOHC turbo engines with a return of 60 and 64 “forces”. Transmission - 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. Kei's drive could be front or all-wheel drive. Depending on the modification, gas mileage is 4.5-6 liters per 100 km. The volume of the fuel tank is 30 liters.

Suzuki Kei has improved driving performance on poorly paved roads. Independent front suspension, rear dependent. The standard car was equipped with tires 165 / 70R14 or 155 / 80R13. The ground clearance reaches 175-185 mm, giving the Kei good maneuverability, especially with an all-wheel drive system. The front brakes of the car are ventilated disc, and the rear ones are drum. The Kei Works model features low-profile tires 165 / 60R15, as well as disc brakes on all wheels and an LSD differential (front-wheel drive and MKP). Kei body dimensions have not changed: length 3395 mm, width 1475 mm, height ranged from 1545 to 1595 mm. The length of the wheelbase is 2360 mm. Interior dimensions: 1685 x 1220 x 1265 mm (L x W x H). The luggage compartment of Kei is 200 liters. It has a finish made of easily washable materials, the rear seats fold down to form an even, almost square cargo area.

The restyled Suzuki Kei was delivered with two front airbags, four-wheel ABS (an option for younger trim levels) with a brake assist system. The car was standardly equipped with three-point seat belts in all places (front with pretensioners and limiters), child seat mounts. An optional stabilization system was offered for some models. The body has zones of programmed deformation, stiffening amplifiers in the doors.

In the wake of the growing demand for this car, Suzuki has made the Kei model line more diverse. The car regularly received partial improvements (improving environmental performance, adding new options, etc.), and the next minor modernization took place in 2006. Enumerating the advantages, the owners note the economy, maneuverability, maneuverability, agility (in versions of the "turbo"). Cons: tightness, stiffness of the suspension, a small resource of motors.
