In May 1998, Suzuki introduced an upgraded version of the Wagon R Wide model, which was created on the basis of the first generation Wagon R in 1997. The front grille and bumper have been changed, in addition, there is a sports modification XR, which has a new design of the grille and round headlights. Together with the continuing release of the XZ version, the new modification was equipped only with a 100-horsepower turbo engine. Present in the lineup and an atmospheric engine (70 hp).
Suzuki Wagon R Wide is considered a model of a higher class in terms of interior equipment and space. It is not a "kei car" and has been certified as a "regular car." Most of its interior was redesigned, here are the original front panel and "tidy". The basic equipment looked pretty empty, but in the expensive versions with the Wagon R Wide turbo engine it had power windows and a central lock, air conditioning, wood trim, fog lights and a rear wiper. After the release of the new version of the XR, in June 1998 XL XL and XZ Limited trim levels were added. The first was standardly equipped with an LCD monitor, spoiler, aluminum wheels. For the second, a premium audio system with a CD player and 6 speakers was offered, and the seats were trimmed with better quality fabric.

Equipped with a Wagon R Wide liter 4-cylinder K10A engine (16-valve DOHC), intercooled and turbocharged. The engine is made entirely of aluminum. Its maximum power is 100 hp. (at 6500 rpm), traction - 118 Nm (at 4000 rpm). And if we take into account the specific power, then only 8.4-9.2 kg of weight fell on one horsepower, which is more than enough for a car weighing 840-920 kg. Of course, with a 70-horsepower engine in atmospheric performance, this was not such a winning option. On the Wagon R Wide, a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox was installed. If we talk about fuel consumption, then in the 10/15 mode, the manufacturer announced 5-6.6 l / 100 km with a conventional engine and 5.4-6.8 l / 100 km with a turbocharger.

The design of the “hodovka” here is similar to the Suzuki Wagon R: independent front suspension (MacPherson strut) and rear dependent. Thanks to the improved suspension, the car has excellent driving characteristics for its class. The Wagon R Wide has a wider track - 1360/1355 mm (front / rear), while the Wagon R has 1220/1210 mm. The braking system combines ventilated discs in the front and drum mechanisms in the rear. Power steering rack and pinion type. The car was equipped with standard rubber size 165 / 65R13. Its dimensions were: 3400 x 1575 x 1705. For comparison, the Wagon R had a body length of 3295 mm, a width of 1395 mm, and a height of 1640-1695 mm. The difference in the length and height of the cabin was minuscule 5 and 30 mm (respectively, it is 1690 and 1310 mm), but in width the Wagon R Wide was more spacious by quite tangible 155 mm (1335 mm). In a more favorable direction, the car was distinguished by the layout of the seats and the volume of the trunk.

The safety of the Wagon R Wide in Suzuki was approached quite strictly. For example, the driver’s airbag was present here even in the simplest configuration, and in expensive, the manufacturer could order an additional passenger airbag and anti-lock brake system; seat belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters were installed on the front seats.  Wagon R Wide inherited from Wagon R such strengths as wide interior space, ease of operation and ease of use. A big plus of the car was the presence of a fairly powerful 4-cylinder turbo engine. For some time, the car was produced even after Suzuki released the second generation Wagon R. Well, since 1999, the history of the “wide” modification has been continued by the new Wagon R + model.
