The Suzuki Wagon R, which began production in 1993, instantly achieved high sales figures. The reasons for such great popularity and, moreover, holding the position of the best-selling car in Japan were unsurpassed convenience, ease of operation, which so far could not be found in any car, and a roomy interior. These three aspects were associated mainly with sedans, so the creation of the Wagon R was a truly landmark event. Its box-like style and large interior space appealed to many young male buyers, although the buyers of minicars in Japan were mostly women. As the only unit, the car went to the 660 cc 3-cylinder F6A engine. cm from the Alto model, in the atmospheric or turbocharged version.
The benefits of the Suzuki Wagon R do not end there. What are the seats that can be folded out and adjustable! Initially, the body was equipped with two doors on the left and one right door. A full 5-door version appeared a little later, after restyling. If we talk about the equipment, then, of course, the simplest configurations could not offer anything special, except for a separate rear seat and options like fog lights, a rear spoiler, but the expensive versions had standard windows, air conditioning, radio, rear wiper and more. Note that in 1993 it was the first Suzuki car and the first mini-car to receive the "Car of the Year" award. All modifications of the Suzuki Wagon R from 1993-1995 were equipped with a 3-cylinder 12-valve engine of the F6A series of a design of the SOHC type and a displacement of 657 cc. The engine with natural aspiration produced a maximum power of 55 “forces” and a torque of 57 Nm, but even to achieve such indicators it still needed to be untwisted up to 7500 and 5500 rpm, respectively. So only turbo modifications - from February 1995 - endowed the hatchback with quite decent dynamics, comparable to cars with more voluminous engines. In the turbocharged version that was used in the 660 RT / S series, the SOHC 6V engine developed 61 horsepower, spinning up to 6,000 rpm, and the maximum torque reached 61 Nm at 3,500 rpm. The choice of gearbox was limited to a mechanical 5-speed or automatic 3-speed transmission. But the drive could be front or full.

A relative of the Suzuki Alto, the Wagon R received the same suspension type and layout, which included an independent front structure (MacPherson strut) and an ITL (Isolated Trailing Link) rear suspension, which is a beam with trailing arms and coil springs. All-wheel drive cars have a rear suspension - a bridge on springs. The brake system combines disk mechanisms in the front (for turbo - increased diameter) and drum mechanisms in the rear. Power steering rack and pinion type. The dimensions of the body of the Wagon R were imposed by the standard for "key cars", advanced back in 1990. Its length should not exceed 3.3 m (in this case - 3295 mm), width - 1.4 m (1395 mm), and height - 2 meters (1640-1695 mm). The spaciousness of the cabin in this class is a relative concept. The Wagon R had a length of 1685 mm, a width of 1180, and a height of 1315-1340 mm. With the rear seats folded, a flat trunk area was obtained. A high roof made it possible to load more things than, for example, in the same Suzuki Alto, and an additional glazing height improved visibility.

With safety, Suzuki Wagon R's first years of production were not in the best way. The 1993-1995 cars had neither pillows nor ABS. The proposed set included only three-point seat belts for all seats, the safety design of the panels and the steering column, and the beams in the doors that protect against side impact.

Given that the Suzuki Wagon R was considered a revolutionary model (“R” that means) and actually became the progenitor of a new segment of urban mini-cars, it can be justifiably argued that the “first pancake” did not come out lumpy. Yes, the car had a number of “flaws”, such as an outdated aggregate base and non-standard safety, but already in 1995 the model was modernized in various positions, including the appearance of a 64-horsepower version of the turbo engine, and then a 5-door body. The advantages of the Wagon R are clear even from its name: almost “bus” landing, decent internal height, etc. Disadvantages - low ground clearance, weak base engine. It is worth considering the high cost of spare parts for this generation.
