SUV
The third-generation Toyota 4Runner was introduced as a 1996 model. Now it is a mid-size SUV built on the basis of the Land Cruiser Prado. A new model of the modern type, equally oriented both to the urban environment and off-road walks. The car received a completely redesigned chassis, new engines, a more modern streamlined body (its dimensions increased), more functions of comfort and luxury in the cabin. Added new security systems. In general, the appearance of 4Runner retained recognition and the general principle of design, but the back door, for example, is now liftable. Over the years, the car received a number of updates, the most significant of which occurred in 1999 and 2001. For the American buyer, the 4Runner was available with both rear-wheel drive and the 4WD system in various versions. In the engine line, the main role is still assigned to the gasoline V6. Now it is a 3.4-liter 5VZ-FE (183 hp), replacing the 3.0-liter 3VZ-E engine of its predecessor.
Toyota 4Runner received a truly passenger, comfortable and comfortable interior. There were two complete sets for an SUV: SR5 (basic) and Limited. The standard equipment includes halogen headlights, full power accessories and a central locking with a remote key, factory tinted windows, velor interior, air conditioning, and an audio system with a CD player. The full-featured version will offer foglights, leather interior, wood trim, climate control, plastic protection for the bottom of the car doors and wheel arch extensions. As for the latter, it is worth considering that the third-generation 4Runner body wings are made less embossed than their predecessors, therefore, in the absence of such a “trifle”, dirt spills onto the body. The expanders also came standard with the Sport package for the SR5 (2001-2002) package - these machines are additionally distinguished by a chassis tuned for high performance (other brakes and a rear differential), some changes in appearance (color bumpers, air intake on the hood) and in the passenger compartment ( racing seats, keyless entry, roof rack, sunroof).  The line of engines of the third generation Toyota 4Runner (N180) for the American market consisted of two engines. The main one is the 3.4-liter V6 Series 5VZ-FE of the DOHC type. This is not only the most powerful motor in the VZ series, but, according to many experts, the most reliable. It has a cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum head, and is distinguished by a maintainable design. Power 185 HP at 4800 rpm and a maximum torque of 294 Nm in the zone of 3600 rpm allow the SUV to accelerate to a maximum speed of 175 km / h. Acceleration to 100 km / h - in 10 seconds. On the 4Runner was also installed inline “four” - a gasoline 2.7-liter 3RZ-FE (150 hp, 235 Nm). This engine is notable for the outstanding ratio between volume and power at that time and is also considered the most successful in its series. Gearbox options, as before, include either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The front suspension of the third-generation Toyota 4Runner is independent double wishbone, the rear is dependent. The all-wheel drive system is designed in such a way that the SUV is rear-wheel drive, exactly until the front axle is engaged. This may be the new improved MultiMode 4WD system, in the transfer case of which there is an interaxle differential, due to which all-wheel drive can be used constantly in any conditions, plus there is the possibility of locking. Or there may be a Part Time ADD system without a center differential, inherited from its predecessor. Both there and there is a reduction gear, which increases the off-road qualities of the car by an order of magnitude. Optionally, it can be equipped with a friction-type rear differential. The dimensions of the body of the third-generation Toyota 4Runner are: length - 4656 mm, width - 1689 mm, height - 1801 mm. Ground clearance - 240 mm. The maximum load capacity is 685 kg with a permissible gross weight of 2381 kg. The luggage compartment of the Toyota 4Runner has a volume of 1263 liters. Transformable rear row allows you to increase its size to 2260 liters.

In the third generation, Toyota 4Runner has become safer than its predecessors. The car received two airbags (driver and front passenger), front belts with tensioners, child seat fastenings, anti-lock brakes. The third-generation extended gauge Toyota 4Runner has increased stability on the track. The indicators of passive safety of the SUV have improved. Since 2001, daytime running lights, TRAC (traction control) and VSC (vehicle stability control) systems have appeared on the equipment list.

Toyota 4Runner in the third generation came close to comfortable top-class SUVs. The presence of a new all-wheel drive system has made it even more convenient in everyday use. The car has a number of characteristic shortcomings and “diseases”. These include lower ball joints that require timely replacement, warping of brake discs, sagging rear springs. Check and about corrosion will not hurt.
