Chaser has always been considered the “brother” of a model such as the Mark II, which was popular as a family car until the first half of the 1990s. Chaser of this generation is higher than its “classmates” in equipping the cabin; in the hierarchy of Toyota's lineup, it stands above Corona, but lower than Crown. The Chaser is notable for its roomy interior and relatively low landing - this form was popular at that time. Due to the favorable economic situation in the country, the car managed to achieve a high level of sales. Separate modifications of this generation are equipped with powerful engines with two turbines or a supercharger. One of the versions, the GT Twin Turbo, which gained great popularity, was produced with a turbocharged engine of 2.5 l and 280 hp.
 Sales of the next (fourth) generation Chaser in Japan began in August 1988. The car was presented with a very wide range of trim levels in increasing order of equipment: XL, XG, Raffine, SXL, Avante, Avante Twin Cam 24, GT Twin Turbo and Avante G. Among the models of the upper price range, the most interesting options are, of course, the GT modification with the most powerful engine, as well as the top version of the Avante G with a very impressive list of equipment for its time: fog lights, electric sunroof, rear spoiler, rear wiper, steering wheel in leather braid and tilt and reach adjustment, leather interior, power front seats, full power accessories, electronic instrument panel, climate control, cassette player, CD changer, 6 speakers, 15 "alloy wheels, etc. The first improvements affected the model already in 1989, and in 1990 there were larger changes that affected the motor range to a large extent.

 At Chaser, taking into account the popularity of the model and its various purposes, a wide range of engines was installed. At the time of the generation's launch, these were 4-cylinder in-line: gasoline 4S-Fi with a volume of 1.8 liters (105 hp) and diesel 2L (2.4 liters, 85 liters. s.) and 2L-T (94 hp); as well as in-line “sixes”: 1G-FE (2.0 liters, 135 hp), 1G-GE (Twin Cam, 150 hp) and turbo 1G-GZE (SUPER CHARGER), 1G-GTE ( TWIN TURBO) with 170 and 210 hp respectively. In 1989, modifications appeared with the three-liter “six” 7M-GE (200 hp), and in 1990 there was already a more serious modernization of the engine range, after which the 1.8 4S-FE engine developed 115 hp, and top-level models received new engines - 1JZ-GE (6 cylinders, 2.5 liters, 180 liters. p.) and 1JZ-GTE Twin Turbo (280 hp). The rear-wheel drive Chaser could be equipped with both mechanical and automatic transmission.

 The front suspension of the Chaser is a strut with a coil spring, the rear is an independent double wishbone with a coil spring. The very comfortable behavior of the car on the road largely determines the nature of the suspension, which corresponds to the name of the car (“pursuer”, “participant in the hurdle race”) - small pits, cracks, bumps are perfectly swallowed. We can note the overall high reliability of the design, as a result of which the operation of the chassis of even an old car does not require too much cost.

 Very different modifications of Toyota Chaser of this generation in terms of safety. For the basic versions of the early release, there is no modern equipment at all, except for the safety steering column and three-point seat belts. Only the more expensive versions have an improved set of equipment, which optionally offered ABS systems, traction control, and for later versions - a driver's airbag. And only in the top trim levels all this can be present regularly.

 Like many Japanese cars of those years, Chaser is of interest for tuning and restoration, so that the demand even for old cars is quite high. Still, the Toyota Chaser in the 80th body is one of the legends of the Japanese automobile industry. Cars of this generation today have a respectable age, but some of them are still in good condition, and the prices, taking this into account, are far from symbolic.
