The second generation Toyota Corolla Spacio, despite its capacity (7 people), belongs to the smallest cars in its class. This is a 5-door minivan based on the Toyota Corolla. The salon of the first generation Corolla Spacio accommodated up to 6 people. In 2001, a new generation of the model debuted, which gradually also became popular. The layout of the cabin received a 2 + 3 + 2 scheme. The length of the body grew to 4.3 meters, and, as a result, the passenger space of the car increased. The distance between the seats of the second and first row is greater than that of Corolla sedans; the seats and backs of the third-row seats, despite their small thickness (7 cm), are suitable for any passengers, although it will be convenient here only for small children. Unlike the previous generation, where the gear lever was located on the floor, the new Corolla Spacio now has a typical minivan front end - the transmission control knob is located on the ledge of the front panel, as a result of which it was easy to get from the driver's seat to the next passenger or back row . In the basic configuration V, the car is equipped with manual air conditioning, power steering, power accessories, tilt steering column, rear wiper. As an option, front and rear fog lights, front and rear spoilers, wood trim panels, DVD navigation system, alloy wheels are possible. In more expensive trim levels, for example, in the luxurious XG EDITION, which is distinguished by maximum equipment, there may be: leather steering wheel braid, climate control system, panoramic sunroof, remote key, tinted windows, xenon headlights. Naturally, there are more than all kinds of drawers and cup holders, the abundance of which the previous generation was famous for. Another representative of the upper price range is the sports version of S AEROTOURER, which is not only the most equipped, but also characterized by a dark interior, the presence of front seats with improved lateral support, a three-spoke steering wheel, appropriate aero body kit and casting of an exclusive design, instrument panels with red scales and t n. After restyling in 2003, the simplest versions were excluded from the model range, and the top ones received the best equipment, in particular, rain and light sensors, automatic head light control, heated outside mirrors.
The new generation of Corolla Spacio also got new engines equipped with a VVT system. The basic power unit 1NZ-FE has a power of 109-110 hp with a volume of 1.5 liters; and the engine 1ZZ-FE with a volume of 1.8 liters - 125-136 liters. with. depending on version. In this generation, a more powerful motor is placed not only on all-wheel drive, but also on front-wheel drive versions. As before, cars are equipped only with automatic transmission. As for the all-wheel drive, it is now not permanent - such as V-Flex with rear wheels connected by viscous coupling.
The suspension of the new Spacio has changed. Ahead, however, everything is as usual - independent, spring-loaded with McPherson struts. But behind - two options. For front-wheel drive, this is a semi-independent suspension on a torsion beam. And only for all-wheel drive modifications retained an independent design, but already on a new two-link suspension. Accordingly, we can even talk about a small intraspecific difference in class and, of course, the nature of behavior on the road. Despite the enlargement and increase in wheelbase from 2465 to 2600 mm, the minimum turning radius of the Corolla Spacio increased slightly - up to 4.9 meters. In terms of safety, the car has become even better. For example, the list of electronic "assistants" in the standard equipment has expanded - to the systems ABS (anti-lock braking system) and Brake Assist (auxiliary braking), EBD (electronic brake force distribution system) has been added. The car received a ruggedized body, it is equipped with front airbags (lateral - optional), seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, child seat fasteners, and some trim levels have an integrated child seat. The second generation Corolla Spacio has become significantly larger and more spacious. It is clear that this car should not be considered as a full-fledged minivan - this is impossible in a compact class. However, Spacio is very comfortable, practical and quite roomy, which allows it to be considered a great choice for the family. Mostly, versions with a 1.5-liter engine are widespread on the market, but in order to feel more confident on the track at full load, a 1.8-liter engine will be preferable, especially since there is an opportunity to find an option with 4WD.
