In May 1983, the fifth generation Toyota Corolla - E80 was released. The main innovations were the independent suspension of all wheels and the transition to front-wheel drive with a transverse power unit. For the domestic Japanese market, Toyota Corolla produced a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback in bodies, the latter was officially designated as a liftback. The family also included models Corolla FX (compact hatchback with 3- and 5-door body) and Corolla Levin (coupe and three-door hatchback, the only ones based on the previous TE71 rear-wheel drive chassis). As for the five-door hatchback Corolla, its functional advantages were very much in demand for family use and outdoor activities, but, unlike other models, it was deprived of simple 1300 series, as well as the most powerful and sporty versions of the GT type.
A distinctive feature of the Corolla E80 was a completely new design: a dynamic wedge-shaped appearance was more consistent with the increased speed qualities of the model and was better combined with the needs of young customers. A slightly increased wheelbase made the car more spacious. The manufacturer has improved equipment. Very comfortable seats were installed with many adjustments, it was possible to fold the back of the back sofa in parts; the car was equipped with electric mirrors, tilt-adjustable steering column. Options included air conditioning or climate control, power windows, sunroof, digital instrument cluster, etc. e. Standardly, the car received side door mirrors, but in some trim levels the mirrors continued to be mounted on the front wings. In 1985, the Corolla E80 underwent a small restyling.

The fifth-generation Corolla lineup E80 (1983-1987) brought with it completely new engines, more powerful and economical. For the Japanese market, the Corolla 5-Door liftback offered the following modifications. Gasoline models are represented by the 1500 series with a 3A-LU carburetor engine with a capacity of 83 liters. with. The 1600 models are equipped with a 4A-ELU DOHC engine with EFI electronic fuel injection - their output reaches 100 “forces”. There were also heavy fuel versions - 1800 Diesel with a 65-horsepower 1C-L engine with mechanical injection. If we talk about the transmission, depending on the modification, a 4- or 5-speed “mechanics” or 4-band “automatic” was installed on the car (since 1984 it was electronically controlled by ECT-S), but they continued to install 3 simple versions -speed automatic transmission. In the fifth generation Corolla (E80), the front suspension is independent, such as MacPherson strut. The rear suspension also became independent, with suspension struts on two levers. The hatchback was equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The Corolla E80 has become larger in size: from the previous 4050 mm, the length of the hatchback has increased to 4135 mm, the width and height are 1635 and 1385 mm. The wheelbase has grown from 2400 to 2430 mm. The turning radius was 4.7-4.8 meters. It is important to note that unlike the Corolla FX, which was 185 mm shorter than the sedan, the Corolla hatchback in the factory concept was considered a 3-BOX model (three-volume) and was not inferior in size to the sedan, except in interior dimensions (1805 x 1380 x 1150 - L x W x H), and even then - in millimeters. But surpassed it in roominess and convenience: its fifth door opens a huge opening, it is possible not only to fold the back sofa to carry long things, but also to fold back the front and rear seats and get a big sleeping place for outdoor recreation. A big plus was the low loading height (the former E70 hatchback had a trunk edge above the rear lights). Trunk volume is measured in 311 liters.

Safety Toyota Corolla E80 is fully consistent with the requirements of its time. The car was equipped with modernized plastic bumpers, which ensured minimal damage and improved energy absorption in low-speed collisions, a rear-view mirror with anti-glare effect was installed, child locks in the rear doors, inertia-type three-point belts were used in the front, waist belts for two passengers were used in the back, and since 1986 a seat belt was also mandatory for the central passenger.  The Corolla E80 has become a very successful model - in all, more than 3.3 million cars of this generation have been sold worldwide. The car received well-deserved recognition in our country, when second-hand foreign cars began to be imported. Despite the fact that the fifth generation cars were numerically inferior to the more recent series in the “ninety” body, the old square Korollki also did not stagnate on sale. The car turned out to be surprisingly strong, unpretentious, economical, plus it is quite comfortable and inexpensive. Enviable reliability still allows you to find “live” instances, although there are some difficulties with the search for some parts.

The Toyota Corolla sedan, being the main model of the family, offered the widest series of modifications, starting with the 1300 model with a 75-horsepower gasoline engine, ending with the sports version of the 1600 GT with the new 4A-GELU engine, which reached 130 "forces".

The model range of the fifth-generation Corolla sedan E80 (1983-1987) brought with it completely new engines, more powerful and economical. For the Japanese market, the sedan offered the following modifications.

Simple gasoline carburetor models are represented by the initial 1300 series with a 2A-LU engine with a capacity of 75 liters. with. The 1500 Series was equipped with a more voluminous 3A-LU with 83 hp. Models with 1.6-liter engines offered two versions of the new DOHC-type 4A engine with electronic fuel injection EFI - a return of 100 “forces” (4A-ELU) and 130 “forces” (4A-GELU). With the latter, Corolla was strikingly different in dynamics. There were also versions on heavy fuel - 1800 Diesel with a 65-horsepower engine 1C-L with mechanical injection. If we talk about the transmission, depending on the modification, a 4- or 5-speed “mechanics” or 4-band “automatic” was installed on the car (since 1984 it was electronically controlled by ECT-S), but they continued to install 3 simple versions -speed automatic transmission.  In the fifth generation Corolla (E80), the front suspension is independent of the MacPherson type. The rear suspension also became independent, with suspension struts on two levers. Most modifications of the sedan were equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, but in the sporting 1600 GT disc brakes are traditionally installed on all four wheels. The Corolla E80 has become larger in size: instead of the previous 4050 mm, the length of the sedan has increased to 4135 mm, the width and height were 1635 and 1385 mm. As for the interior, it also increased: 1810 x 1380 x 1160 mm (L x W x H) - for comparison, it had the dimensions of the predecessor 1710 x 1330 x 1130 mm. A big plus was the decrease in the loading height of the trunk of the sedan to the level of the bumper (in previous models, its edge was higher than the rear lights). Trunk volume increased from 250 to 311 liters.  Safety Toyota Corolla E80 is fully consistent with the requirements of its time.
