Toyota Harrier is a car that has been actively exploring a new market for high-end SUVs since 1997. At Toyota, this model was called the abbreviation SUS (Sport Utility Salon). Although not very similar to SUVs designed for a real off-road, Harrier is still equipped with a shockproof arc, independent suspension, a robust body and the Active Engine Control Mount system, which was installed on versions with a 3-liter engine. Excellent sound insulation and luxury equipment level put Harrier on a par with top-class sedans. In fact, this car has become a pioneer of a new genre - luxury sports SUVs that combine the highest level of comfort and ride quality. In the American and European markets, Harrier was introduced with its counterpart, the Lexus RX300.
 From the very beginning of sales of Harrier in the domestic market, the car was presented in a large number of trim levels - the buyer was offered a choice of several modifications, with a rather significant variation in price: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with different engine sizes, with a bias in sportiness or, conversely, luxury. Although in the example with Harrier, it would be more correct to say “even greater luxury”, which is already high even in the basic version. As for the top-end configurations, their cost went for 3 million yen. At the same time, the level of equipment today looks impressive: xenon headlights, fully automatic air conditioning, sunroof, leather interior, “casting” 16 inches, remote control key, factory tinted windows, full power accessories, premium audio system, chic LCD monitor, navigation. In 2000, the model was restyled. The appearance of the grille and headlights was slightly changed, the remaining elements of the body remained intact.

 The first-generation Toyota Harrier can be equipped with one of three engines: a 6-cylinder V-shaped volume of 3 liters and 4-cylinder in-line engines of 2.2 and 2.4 liters. The base engine is 5S-FE (2.2). Power of 140 hp, of course, is not too high, and the accelerating dynamics are not too impressive. But on the other hand, it is a worthy representative of the S series engine family, characterized by high reliability. During the modernization period of 2000, it was replaced by a more powerful 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine, due to which the problem of lack of power was solved. However, its 160 “forces” will seem a trifle compared to 220 “horses” of the three-liter 1MZ-FE, which gives the Harrier the dynamics of a well-charged car. The suspension design is almost typical for a modern crossover - the front and rear axles on powerful suspension struts with springs. At the same time, the corresponding settings provide a rare balance of the independent suspension, due to which high driving characteristics are achieved, so often inaccessible to large SUVs, and at the same time, excellent behavior on broken and country roads than a normal passenger car cannot boast. Harrier is equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On cars with all-wheel drive, a symmetrical cylindrical center differential with viscous clutch is used, and the rear differential LSD is used as an option.

 In the basic version of the 1997 Harrier, there are frontal airbags, seat belts with tension limiters, a child seat locking mechanism, side stiffeners, an anti-lock brake system. Side cushions are an available option for all versions. In general, the level of protection is high enough for its time. On machines of later years of production, an optional traction control system and auxiliary braking system were additionally offered.

 Thanks to its luxury, Toyota Harrier immediately acquired the status of a fashionable car. Neither the price nor the high criminal attractiveness of this model confused Russian buyers. Even today, regardless of his age, the first generation still looks very advantageous and does not intend to give up the position of an expensive and prestigious car, even in the category of highly used cars. Elegant car silhouette is not out of date. And its quality characteristics, reliability and durability are the best confirmation of the validity of interest in it from consumers.
