The Toyota Highlander / Kluger family is built on the Toyota K platform, shared with the Camry sedan and some other models of the company - in particular, the first-generation Highlander shares it with its relative Lexus RX / Toyota Harrier. The car belongs to the class of mid-size crossovers, especially popular in the United States. Distinctive features of the car are strict, adjusted proportions, due to which the "Highlander" (as its name translates) looks very similar to a "jeep." The interior, made of high-quality expensive materials, has an enlarged space, rich equipment, an exquisitely designed front panel with a large center console, on which there is an automatic transmission selector, very comfortable seats and generally meets the requirements of a first-class saloon of a business class car.
The first-generation Toyota Highlander is available in three trim levels: Base, Sport and Limited. The car’s equipment includes halogen headlights, electric side mirrors, a steering wheel with vertical adjustment, rear and front electric windows, heated front seats, air conditioning, a CD player, six speakers, a dividing rear armrest, convenient lighting when landing in the passenger compartment; the second row of seats is folding in a ratio of 60:40, the spare wheel is a full-size wheel. The list of top-end equipment is very impressive: immobilizer, CD changer, remote control key, electric driver’s seat, climate control leather upholstery and steering wheel braid, outside temperature sensor, electric sunroof, roof rails, spoiler, electrically heated mirrors, front fog lights, alloy wheels . After restyling in 2004, Highlander received a new front bumper, grille. The interior was transformed through the use of a multi-function steering wheel with audio control buttons, an updated center console and aluminum trim panels. There was an opportunity to install a third row of seats and accommodate an additional two more passengers.

Line of Toyota Highlander power units: 2.4 engines; 3.0 and 3.3 liters. The first of these, an in-line 4-cylinder 2AZ-FE, has a capacity of 155 liters. with. and torque of 163 Nm. The three-liter 1MZ-FE is a V6 with a VVT-I and 220 horsepower. (222 Nm). The 3MZ-FE engine, which “entered service” in 2006, completes the line - a gasoline V-shaped “six” with a volume of 3.3 liters (3310 cubic cm) with changed power indicators. Originally designed for the Camry, this engine has 225 horsepower. and 325 Nm of torque, but for Highlander, by reconfiguring the computer (ECU), the power was reduced to 215 liters. sec., and torque - up to 301 Nm. Highlander is equipped with an automatic transmission only.

A feature of the chassis is the transverse position of the engine, independent suspension, based on suspension struts at all four points, as well as the possibility of using different all-wheel drive systems. It can be a FullTime STD system - permanent all-wheel drive, a symmetrical cylindrical center differential with viscous clutch. Or VSC + - permanent all-wheel drive with a free symmetrical cylindrical center differential and emulation of locks by braking of stalled wheels. In addition, the platform allows the use of e-FOUR - a 4WD system in which the rear wheels are driven by electric motors - it is used on hybrid versions (MHU28, 2005-2007) intended for the United States.

Initially, the standard equipment for the 2001-2003 Highlander was an anti-lock brake system, emergency brake system and electronic brake force distribution. Since 2004, they added stability control and traction control systems. The tire pressure monitoring system has also become a standard. Airbags make up a set that includes front airbags as standard, side airbags and curtains as an option, and in 2007 they became standard equipment. According to the NHTSA (Japan) and IIHS (U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), Highlander scored high in crash tests. Highlander can be considered a true "American" and a real "Japanese" at the same time. The first generation of this model has not too spectacular, perhaps even a rustic appearance, but this is only apparent simplicity - it conceals very high consumer characteristics, ranging from comfort to safety. The largest selection in the secondary market is offered by modifications with 2.4- and 3-liter engines.
