Sales of the second-generation Toyota Highlander in the United States started in 2007. While maintaining the overall style, the car received a different plastic for the sidewalls of the body, but with the same developed wheel arches, the roof tilt became slightly more pronounced, the headlights became narrower and elongated, the front part is more streamlined. The body of the new car has become larger in general, and the interior is more spacious. Highlander is more comfortable and safer than its predecessor thanks to new options and technical improvements. For units offered three options. This is a 2.7-liter “four” 1AR-FE (187 hp), a 3.5-liter V6 (2GR-FE, 270 hp) and a hybrid gasoline-electric installation based on a 3.3-liter V6 (3MZ-FE, 209 HP).
Highlander has three rows of seats, optionally the second row was offered with captain's chairs with armrests. Good noise isolation and high acoustic comfort is one of the distinguishing features of the model. The standard equipment included telescopic steering wheel adjustment, full power accessories, electric driver's seat, cruise control, air conditioning, audio system with 6 speakers and a CD / MP3 player. The Sport version offered standard daytime running lights and fog lights, an appropriate suspension setting, and a 3.5-inch on-board system display. Options included a leather interior, heated seats, mirrors and a windshield, electric front seats, navigation with an 8-inch screen, dual-zone climate control, a JBL speaker system with 9 speakers and a CD changer. All this could be found in the Limited configuration, which also included a Smart Key system, a push-button start and HomeLink function for remote opening of garage doors.

The simplest front-wheel drive versions of the crossover since 2009 were equipped with an in-line “four” of 2.7 liters with a capacity of 187 hp. in combination with the new 6-speed automatic - this offer was not very popular in the States, where large and powerful cars are valued. Therefore, the most popular - we can consider standard - was a 3.5-liter 24-valve V6, working in tandem with a 5-speed “automatic”. This engine replaced the former 3.3-liter and gave a significant increase in power of about 55 "forces". The Hybrid Highlander is equipped with a Synergy Drive propulsion system with a 3.3 V6 engine at the base and a total power of about 270 hp. Due to the presence of the variator, fuel consumption in this case, even with the 4WD system, was 9.4 liters per 100 km in the city. Toyota Highlander has independent front and rear suspensions with anti-roll bars. The car is very comfortable on the pavement, but does not save on rough terrain, even in a difficult situation - all-wheel drive provides the necessary cross-country ability where it is really needed. The hybrid modification has two electric motors, one of which is in front, the second is installed at the rear and serves to drive the rear wheels. This somewhat limits the capabilities of the machine compared to the traditional all-wheel drive system. The Highlander Hybrid can tow a trailer weighing up to about 1.6 tons, while the regular all-wheel drive version is up to 2.3 tons, which was considered one of the best indicators in the class. The length of the Highlander body is 4785 mm, the width is 1910 mm, the height is 1760 mm, the wheelbase is 2789 mm. The interior looks spacious. Even in the third row there is enough space if we are not talking about a long trip. Thanks to the folding rear seat head restraints, the small 290-liter trunk easily turns into a cargo compartment of 1,200 liters or 2,700 with the rear seats fully retracted. For convenience, the rear window of the crossover opens separately.

Highlander equipment, regardless of the configuration, includes front and side airbags, airbags-curtains and a driver knee airbag; active head restraints, an additional brake light, a complex of systems: anti-lock braking (ABS), brake force distribution (EBD), auxiliary braking system (BAS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control (TCS). In addition, there are nice bonuses in the form of an assistant during the descent from the mountain (DAC) and at the start on the rise (HAC). Like the previous generation, the car got good results in crash tests.

Toyota Highlander - a powerful and stylish all-wheel drive crossover, an ideal family car for traveling long distances, trips to nature. Large ground clearance and four-wheel drive provide excellent cross-country ability in difficult road conditions. In the Russian market, American versions of Highlander are quite popular, starting from the first generation. Of great interest are hybrid modifications.
