One of the most significant innovations of the 2013 New York Motor Show was the new Toyota Highlander. Thanks to the complete redesign, the car began to look significantly larger, although in fact it changed slightly in size. Only slightly increased in length, about 7 cm; It became a little wider, but the height and wheelbase remained the same. At the same time, the cabin has become more spacious, especially for the third row, which is designed for three passengers: Highlander can now be 7- or 8-seater. The crossover got powertrains familiar from the previous version. In the American market, a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine was offered, as well as a 3.5-liter V6 in a traditional and hybrid design.
Changes in the interior of the third-generation crossover are no less significant than on the outside. The new front panel impresses with its design, it has a complex architecture, the bottom has a long and deep tray with a non-slip surface and complemented by ambient lighting. The huge box between the front seats has an impressive size. LE standard equipment includes an 8-seater saloon, a 6.1-inch multimedia touch screen, and a Bluetooth hands-free system. The front seats are equipped with electrically adjustable and heated (in the top configuration - also ventilation). Second-row passengers can move the seats in the longitudinal direction (150 mm) and change the backrest tilt (14 degrees), while in the LE Plus version they get their own climate control, in the same version there is a remote control for the back door. The XLE version includes a leather interior and a large color display on-board system located between the two dials of the instrument panel. Options Limited is standardly equipped with 19-inch wheels, JBL audio system, a full range of available security systems.

For the US market, the initial modification of Toyota Highlander, as before, was the front-wheel drive version, which provided exclusively basic equipment and was equipped with a 2.7-liter inline “four” Dual VVT-i with a capacity of 185 liters. with. and a 6-speed automatic. The standard and most popular version is considered a model with a 3.5-liter V6 - its maximum is 270 hp. make it easy enough to control the acceleration of a machine weighing almost two tons. The combination of a 3.5 V6 engine, a CVT and three electric motors, one of which serves to rotate the rear wheels, creates an all-wheel drive hybrid system. Model 3.5 AT Hybrid is notable for its good economy - 8.4 liters per 100 km in the countryside and 8.7 in the urban cycle. For pure gasoline models, this is 9.4–9.8 and 11.8–13.1 l / 100 km, respectively. However, the all-wheel drive hybrid system is not designed for high loads - the maximum allowable trailer weight is 3,500 pounds, or 1,588 kg, while the Highlander with conventional all-wheel drive has an allowable trailer weight with brakes of 5,000 pounds, or 2,268 kg, which exceeds the same figure models such as the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Mazda CX-9. Like the previous generation, the third Highlander is built on a modified passenger car platform of the Toyota Camry model, with independent suspensions front and rear. Steering - with an upgraded electric power steering, which has a modified gear ratio for greater information. Dimensions Toyota Highlander are: length 4854 mm, width 1925 mm, height 1730 mm. Wheelbase 2789 mm, turning radius 5.9 m. Ground clearance - 200 mm. Car load capacity is about 700 kg. The luggage compartment is 195 liters (up to the glass line) with a third row of seats. In a five-seat configuration - 529 liters. In a double room - 1872 liters.

Highlander's standard equipment for the US market includes a pre-emergency safety system, a full set of airbags (front and side, window blinds), a rear view camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, and an exchange rate stability system. Options include a lane departure warning system, automatic high beam, blind spot monitoring systems and rear cross-traffic warnings. AWD (Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive - like the new RAV4) all-wheel drive system does not pretend to off-road exploits, but will allow you to confidently move on a slippery road, including climbing and during descent (there are corresponding electronic assistants). Highlander has a gorgeous exterior. The running settings are excellent for good roads, but on pavements of not the best quality, the short-stroke suspension works out quite hard. According to the owners, the disadvantages include significant tax and expense, insufficiently high quality paintwork and sound insulation. Like previous generations, versions for the American market are quite in demand in the Russian market, especially hybrid ones that were not officially sold here.
