Toyota Ipsum is a minivan with three rows of seats that can accommodate 7 people. This car, which appeared on the market in 1996, was seen as a competitor to the gaining popularity of the Honda Odyssey minivan. When creating its new product, Toyota used the traditions of "biodesign" of cars of the 90s, showing streamlined forms. The design of Ipsum, for all that, turned out to be quite successful, in a modestly modest way, but at the same time dynamic and still quite fresh looking even today. Ipsum was declared a family car that meets the requirements of quality and trends of the new century. In markets other than domestic, Ipsum was introduced under names such as Picnic and SportsVan.
As part of Toyota’s advertising strategy, the Ipsum model was offered as the perfect car for a travel-loving family, which, in fact, was completely true. Buyers should not have disregarded the spacious interior and improved transformation capabilities: the seats are equipped with a reversal mechanism, and the backs of the second-row seats can turn into tables. The pluses include the lack of a tunnel between the front seats, decent luggage space, an abundance of holders, containers, and pockets. The variety of configurations is small, although in general the level of equipment Ipsum was quite high. The most expensive modification “L selection EX” included fog lights, a double sunroof, roof rails, dual-zone climate control, 14-inch alloy wheels and a navigation system. In 1998 there were minor changes in the design and interior.

Initially, the Ipsum installed a 2-liter gasoline engine; a year later, a complete set appeared equipped with a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine. First engine, petrol 3S-FE with 135 hp - One of the most massive engines of the company, and in terms of combination of characteristics and due to its reliability it is considered to be one of the best Toyota engines of "passenger" series. As for the diesel engine, although the diesel version of the minivan itself may seem interesting, finding Ipsum with it, and even in good condition, is quite difficult — all possible problems inevitably concern the quality of the fuel used.

Toyota Ipsum front suspension - on suspension struts, such as MacPherson strut. The rear is semi-dependent, on a torsion beam. It is possible to note the comfort of movement, although a refined reaction to the steering wheel from the car should not be expected. All-wheel drive modifications until 1998 used the FullTime 4WD mode, i.e. Permanent four-wheel drive with a symmetrical center differential and hydraulic lock clutch. A feature of the post-styling models (since April 1998) was the ATC type drive (with active 4WD control function) with a rear axle connected via an electromechanical clutch. Four-wheel drive is activated by pressing a button. At the same time, the front axle remains constantly leading, but the ATC control unit allows you to smoothly distribute the moment, applying up to half of the total force to the rear wheels. In the off state, the drive is carried out only on the front wheels, which contributes to efficiency. Such a system was used by Toyota for the first time on this model.

When creating the Toyota Ipsum, a GOA type safe body was used, the power structure of which, in accordance with the comparability factor, minimizes the consequences of a collision of cars of different weights. The vehicle’s standard equipment (basic equipment E) includes frontal airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system), and door stiffeners. Since 1998, this list has been replenished with belts with pretensioners and load limiters, a mechanism for fixing a child seat.

The Toyota Ipsum minivan from the moment of its appearance in our market made a serious impression on domestic buyers, instantly becoming popular. Not only the spaciousness of the car, its high versatility and functionality played a role, but also the high landing, visibility, excellent build quality - the latter is confirmed by the long-term operation of the first generation cars, many of which are still in good technical condition.
