The design of the new Land Cruiser model, which was supposed to replace the 60th series, has been developed since the mid-80s. At that time, the “sixties” gained great popularity as a family car for travel and outdoor recreation. The new model was not only to continue, but also to develop this tradition - to become a real SUV, which in terms of comfort would not be inferior to the most chic city cars. So, the Land Cruiser of the 80th series finally got rid of the heavyweight exterior inherent in past generations. Having received a spring suspension, permanent all-wheel drive and a completely new interior, he turned into the real king of all roads - a jeep that can move not only over rough terrain, but also, fully justifying its name, majestically “sail” along the usual highway. Due to the smooth contours characteristic of cars, the LC 80 looks very favorably different from most SUVs of its time. But not only the attractive appearance played a role in the popularity that was to be acquired by this model, which certainly became Toyota's main hit. First of all, it is, of course, rich equipment and multi-purpose. The new Land Cruiser could be used both as a workhorse, and as a car for the whole family, and as a chic executive cruiser. Accordingly, it was possible to choose standard equipment STD, extended GX or VX, a luxury version that provided for the presence of a velor or leather interior, alloy wheels, electric sunroof, full power accessories, dual climate control, heated front seats, a refrigerator, a CD player , winches, etc. The VX-Limited Active Vacation equipment, equipped with a folding bedroom with curtains, a gas stove and even a sink, is ideal for travelers.

For the Land Cruiser 80 was intended a wide line of in-line six-cylinder powertrains. 3F-E gasoline engine (4 L) rated at 155 hp - not the most common option (produced before 1993), extremely reliable, but very voracious - fuel consumption in mixed mode is about 24 l / 100km. This engine was replaced by a more modern 1FZ-FE (4.5 l) in all respects with 24 valves and a power of 215 hp, with which the fuel consumption is 17.5 l / 100km. Connoisseurs of diesel engines could choose either an atmospheric 1HZ (4.2 L) with a capacity of 135 hp or a turbocharged 1HD-T (4.2 L) with a power of 165 hp, which has been replaced by a 1HD-FT modification of 170 capacity since 1995 h.p.

All “eighties” Land Cruiser equipped with dependent spring front and rear suspension with continuous axles attached to the welded frame. We note the high reliability and durability of this design, which is almost not inferior to the machines of the 60th and 70th series. Expensive versions of the LC 80 were equipped with a suspension with adjustable stiffness. Four-wheel drive was offered in different versions. Part-Time - a rigidly connected front-wheel drive, without an interaxle differential, with freewheels in the front hubs and a reduction gear. Or systems with FullTime permanent all-wheel drive - with an interaxle differential and hard-locking, as well as (as an option) front and rear differential locks. Depending on the configuration, Land Cruiser came with both manual and automatic transmissions.

The first Land Cruiser of the 80 series demonstrates the standard safety approach inherent in previous generation cars: only belts and a safety steering wheel are equipped. As they were released, the model received additional equipment: at first, the ABS system was offered only as an option, but since 1996 it has been included in the standard equipment of some trim levels along with airbags for the driver and front passenger. To better absorb shock in a collision, pipes were integrated in the door.

The only and relative, of course, disadvantage of the Land Cruiser 80 series can be called high cost, despite the fact that cars of this generation long ago passed into the category of second-hand. The explanation for this is quite simple: after all, this frame SUV is one of the most reliable cars and, even taking into account obsolescence, is still very much appreciated in the market.
