The "hundredth" Mark II series is the eighth generation of a popular model, which began in 1996. Compared with the previous generation, all the changes are more evolutionary in nature, however, to some extent, revolutionary solutions can also be found - for example, the rejection of the low-power gasoline “four” and completely utilitarian versions on the “mechanics” - even diesel engines were equipped automatic gearbox. Thus, Toyota Mark II has finally established itself as a model with a well-established image of a powerful and richly equipped car.
Accordingly, a decrease in the total number of complete sets, the level of their equipment has increased. Even the single most simple and inexpensive equipment GL (diesel only), which could boast only power accessories and climate control, did not last long, since buyers showed more interest in the Grande equipment, which includes wood trim, electric front seats, remote key, radio with the ability to read CD-ROMs, and as an option - sunroof, rear wiper, heated outside rear-view mirrors, etc. Modifications with all-wheel drive “Grande Four” were of great interest. Mark II "Tourer", as before, has a sports orientation, according to which the presence of xenon headlights, leather braiding of the steering wheel was assumed, the steering wheel itself has vertical and telescopic adjustment. In addition, the Tourer modification is characterized by a large exhaust pipe and special front optics, 16-inch alloy wheels. In 1998, Toyota Mark II underwent restyling.

The most powerful Mark II Tourer V is equipped with a 280 hp 1JZ-GTE in-line turbine engine. (6DOHC, VVT-i). Under the hood of the most comfortable and luxurious versions of the Mark II “Grande G”, there is a three-liter “six” 2JZ-GE, inherited from the previous generation. The main priority was made on the configuration with the engine 1JZ-GE with a volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 200 liters. with., also inherited almost unchanged. As for the basic two-liter 1G-FE, in 1998 this engine underwent another modernization and also received a VVT system, thanks to which its power increased from 140 to 160 “horses”. Apart is the only 2L-TE turbocharged diesel power unit that deserves attention not so much with the actual power value (97 hp), but with low fuel consumption and quite good torque - 221 Nm. Front suspension Mark II - independent, double wishbone, spring. Rear - independent on double wishbones. Modifications “Tourer V” have a sporty tuning chassis, limited slip differential LSD, which, coupled with a 5-speed “mechanics” give Mark II the characteristics of a sports car. However, for all the dynamic characteristics of the model, it should be borne in mind that the ground clearance is not too large, and on cars with body kits it becomes even critically low. All-wheel drive system of individual modifications - FullTime 4WD with an asymmetric differential. Expensive configurations were equipped with an adjustable TEMS suspension, which provides several levels of shock absorber stiffness, and the driver can choose the desired mode depending on traffic conditions and the quality of the road surface.

A significant step forward was made in the approach to security. The ABS system was standardly installed on all trim levels. The more expensive standard is TCS Traction Control. It was also possible to equip the car with a VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system and even a tire pressure tracking system. A set of airbags includes front (for the driver and passenger - this is standard) and side airbags.

Toyota Mark II is fully consistent with the figurative concept of a "real Japanese car", which implies an alloy of comfort, quality, reliability. Which, to a large extent, is demonstrated by cars on the secondary market. It should only be taken into account that this model is very popular among young people and there is a very high probability of meeting specimens that have been "their first car" with several owners in a row.
