In the spring of 2016, sales of third-generation Toyota Passo and Daihatsu Boon hatchbacks began in Japan. In fact, under these names the same car is produced, which differs in design. Note that the development of the machine was done in Daihatsu. The hatchback retained its previous proportions and dimensions comparable to its predecessor, but the wheelbase increased by 50 mm, and the space between the rows - by 75 mm. The body became lighter and at the same time more rigid, safer. Buyers of both models will not have to choose between different power plants - only one engine is provided. This is the familiar 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit with a capacity of 69 hp.
In the new generation of Passo, instead of the previous special version of “Hana”, a no less interesting modification of Moda appeared, with a modified front end. If the standard Passo X has a U-shaped false radiator grille, a simple bumper and angular headlights, then the “face” of the Passo Moda looks more emotional, featuring small round headlights, a black bumper air intake with built-in fog lights and a shorter hood, branded emblem from which moved to a hexagonal grille with a chrome frame. The interior of the car has completely changed and become more spacious, the new front panel has freed up more space and gives a feeling of greater width. At the “tide" of the center console, climate and transmission controls are located. The standard equipment, apart from the most inexpensive basic versions, includes 14-inch aluminum wheels, automatically folding mirrors with remote control, keyless entry system, heated seats and windshield, on-board computer display, rear view camera, engine start button and many others options. As already noted, there is only one engine for Toyota Passo. This is a 1KR-FE three-cylinder engine that develops 69 hp. power (at 6000 rpm) and 92 Nm of thrust (at 4400 Nm). The previous 1.3-liter “four” with a capacity of 95 hp, which was equipped with the previous generation, is no more. The new motor is equipped with a variator, the car, as before, can be ordered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The front-wheel drive gasoline consumption is 3.6 l / 100 km, i.e. under ideal conditions, the car can drive up to 28 km on one liter, thanks to the presence of a fuel economy system with a stop function at idle. The latter is now available for all-wheel drive modifications, as a result of which the all-wheel drive version increases the consumption to just 4.1 l / 100 km (24.4 km / l). The fuel tank volume in the new generation Passo is 36-38 liters. The chassis has not fundamentally changed. The front of the Toyota Passo / Daihatsu Boon has MacPherson struts, the rear has a torsion beam or a dependent suspension for all-wheel drive cars. But the configuration of the shock absorbers, anti-roll bars has changed, the steering has been modernized. The minimum turning radius is very good - 4.6 m in combination with 14-inch wheels (tires 165 / 65R14). The external dimensions of the hatchback are 3650 mm in length, 1665 mm in width and 1525 mm in height. The wheelbase has grown from 2440 to 2490 mm. The mass of the car ranges from 910 to 960 kg, depending on the version. The dimensions of the interior 1975 x 1420 x 1270 mm (L x W x H) show a tangible increase in length (+145 mm) and small in height (+10 mm) while maintaining the same width. The front seat of the sofa type, as well as the rear folding seats (in a proportion of 60:40) determine the comfort and practicality of the hatchback. The car has many compartments for things. The trunk in the standard position of the rear seats has a volume of 193 liters and 670 with folded.
Passo hatchback is equipped as standard with front and side airbags, curtain airbags, ABS and EBD, a brake assist system, a set of VSC & TRC (stability control and traction control). The hatch also has a proprietary accident prevention complex called Smart Assist II: it includes an emergency braking system with functions to prevent head-on collisions, control a false start, warnings about driving out of the lane, as well as a traffic jam help system that can warn you if you are ahead the car began to move. The manufacturer also claims that the body of the new design differs from the previous one not only in reduced weight, but also in increased rigidity.
In the third generation, Toyota Passo / Daihatsu Boon have become more spacious, safer, more economical. The model is still ideal for a large city where there are problems with parking. Some questions are caused by the availability of only three-cylinder modifications, although, as the operating experience of previous generations shows, with proper maintenance, the “motor” can last up to 200 thousand without any problems. km and more. He is quite coping with his duties, but on the track, in order to stay in the stream along with everyone, he has to press the pedal more than usual. Of the "diseases": a weak pump and a tendency of the engine to vibrate, a stiffer suspension. In 2018, an updated version of the hatchback was released.
