At the beginning of 2017, a generation change of the Prius PHV took place in Japan - that is, the Prius with the ability to recharge batteries from an external network. The model labeled ZVW52 has different names depending on the market: in Japan and Taiwan it is called the Prius PHV, in North America and South Korea it is the Prius Prime, in France it is the Prius Hybride Rechargeable, and in the rest of Europe it is the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The new generation received a 25 Ah lithium-ion battery (21.5 Ah for the predecessor), the battery consists of 95 cells (instead of the previous 56), its total voltage is 351.5 volts (instead of the previous 207.2 volts), the total reserve energy - 8.8 kWh (previously 4.4). The declared electric range is 68.2 km, which is almost three times more than the first version of the Prius PHV. In addition, instead of one 18-kilowatt electric motor, two are now installed - with a capacity of 37 and 15.8 kW. This innovation, in particular, improved the dynamic characteristics of the car in the mode of movement on electricity.  Another innovation is a heating system with a heat pump. The fact is that hybrids and electric cars do not have at their disposal the “excess” heat that is generated in ICE machines and which is usually used for heating. Therefore, energy is used for heating, which could be spent on movement. To avoid such an irrational waste of energy, a climate system with a heat pump was introduced using the technology of intermediate refrigerant injection. This system allows you to heat the interior without the participation of internal combustion engines at an external temperature of minus 10 degrees and above. In more severe frosts, the help of an internal combustion engine will already be required.

 Recharging the new Prius PHV can be done from the home power grid - in 2 hours 20 minutes at a voltage of 200 volts or in 14 hours from a 100-volt network. At a special station, charging in 20 minutes is possible. There is another option - the use of solar energy. For an additional fee of 280 thousand yen, you can get a roof with a built-in solar module.

 In the new generation, developers have isolated the Prius PHV from the regular Prius, creating an individual look for the PHV: here is a more predatory “eye cut”, a large polyacrylate radiator grille and a curious double bubble rear window. For the first time on a Toyota production car, a carbon fiber tailgate design has been used.

 All Prius PHVs in Japan are equipped as standard with the Toyota Safety Sense P security package (the simplest S package allows you to opt out of this equipment if you wish): this includes a collision warning system, lane keeping assist, radar cruise control and adaptive high beam. In addition, all configurations except S include a new communication module with an 11.6-inch screen.
