Toyota Sparky is an analogue of the Daihatsu Atrai7 model, manufactured by Toyota as part of the authorized production of borrowed models (OEM). The appearance of the base model Daihatsu Atrai pretty much worked designer Giugiaro, making the derivative machine began to look more elegant. At least, he managed to shake the already prevailing idea of what a one-box subcompact car is. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the larger Atrai7, and with it Sparky, has the most spacious cabin in its class - this allowed the insertion of an additional row of seats, and the location of the seats corresponds to the 2-3-2 scheme. The engine was of one kind - the 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine of the DOHC type.
A feature of the layout of the front of the Toyota Sparky, as well as the Daihatsu Atrai7, is that the automatic transmission control knob has been moved to the steering column to set up a sofa-type seat in front. Moreover, it is located in such a way that allowed to freely change from left to right and vice versa, without leaving the cabin. It should also be noted that the seats of the second and third row were folded in half and cleaned in this form. This made it possible to get a spacious luggage compartment with a flat floor. And most importantly, in the back (third) row, the passenger was no closer than if he was in the same place, but in the saloon of a 2-liter class minivan. Equipment implies the basic version of X and full-featured G, taking into account packages with rationally selected equipment. Power windows, air conditioning were standardly offered. The expensive versions will offer a sunroof, alloy wheels, wood inserts, leather steering wheel, navigation system, dual air conditioning, etc.

The Toyota Sparky powertrain is similar to the Daihatsu Atrai7 model - it is a 1.3-liter gasoline 4-cylinder 16-valve engine taken from Daihatsu Storia (Toyota Duet). As noted, this engine has a strong reputation for driving performance and fuel consumption. The maximum power of 90 horsepower is achieved at 6000 rpm, while the engine is quite high-torque - the maximum torque is 123 Nm (at 4400 rpm). It works in combination with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic with electronic control, the latter even has a sports mode. As for fuel consumption, a minivan can drive up to 14-16 kilometers (6.25-7.14 l / 100 km) on one liter of gasoline. In 2002, engine power was increased to 92 “horses”, while efficiency increased - up to 14.6-17 km / l.

Toyota Sparky / Daihatsu Atrai7 is built on the same base as the Atrai Wagon, but modified to take into account the increase in size and weight. He has an independent, spring-loaded front suspension on MacPherson struts, rear dependent, spring, on trailing arms. Rear-wheel drive models have an S221G body index, and all-wheel drive models have an S231G. Disc brakes front and drum rear. The car is equipped with a steering gear type steering with hydraulic booster. The body dimensions of Toyota Sparky are as follows: length 3765 mm, width 1515 mm, height 1895 mm. Wheelbase - 2430 mm. The minimum turning radius is 4.4 m. Interior dimensions 2585 x 1310 x 1265 mm (L x W x H). Door combination: two hinged doors + sliding doors on both sides + tailgate. In addition to the possibility of folding the 2nd and 3rd row, longitudinal adjustment of the position of the second row seats (480 mm) is provided.

Toyota Sparky safety measures include two airbags for the driver and front passenger, front belts with pretensioners and force limiters, three-point belts for the rear seats, side stiffeners, and a rugged body. For an extra charge installed anti-lock braking system ABS. Since 2002, ABS has become the standard for top-end trim levels with EBD brake force distribution and a brake booster (optional for low-cost versions).

If you evaluate the car in general, then compared to the Daihatsu Atrai7, the Toyota Sparky model should be considered a little more expensive. The minivan corresponds to the concept of a “car for seven adults”, so the second and third row of seats have enough free space. Transformations of the second and third row allow you to configure the interior depending on the tasks. However, with a full landing, the luggage space is minimal. The K3-VE engine is a fairly common and unpretentious unit, known for the Storia / Duet models, but here it is modest in dynamics - yet the minivan is significantly heavier. Another minus of the car is windage. The release of the model was discontinued in 2003.
