Toyota Starlet appeared on the market in 1978 and is a compact hatchback-type car with low fuel consumption. The first generations of these cars were sports with rear-wheel drive (FR), since 1984 (the third generation), front-wheel drive (FF) was more suitable for compact class cars, despite this, the sports image of the car was retained when developing a turbocharged modification. The model was produced with a 3- and 5-door body, while in the fourth generation there was a clearer separation: in contrast to the five-door versions, there were sports and GT modifications in the three-door line, the latter were equipped with a 135-horsepower turbo engine.
Of the entire Toyota Starlet range, the GT model stands out, which is distinguished by a hood with an air intake, a special bumper with a large lower grille, and large fog lights. The three-door in this configuration was standardly equipped with a rear spoiler and a rear wiper, a three-spoke steering wheel with tilt adjustment and sports front seats, aluminum wheels with a choice of design, GT emblems on the grille, rear door trim and steering wheel. Options included power accessories and a central locking system, a leather steering wheel, an audio system with 6 speakers, a CD player, a powerful amplifier and a remote control. This generation continued the release of youth versions with a folding soft roof such as Canvas Top, giving a sense of openness.

Petrol modifications of the Toyota Starlet P80 series in 1989 received a new 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine with two camshafts (DOHC 16V), which with an electronic injection system EFI (4E-FE) produced a maximum power of 100 hp The electronically controlled carburetor version (4E-F) had a 82 liter return. with. Apart, of course, are the GT modifications, which have an intercooled turbocharged engine (4E-FTE), which produces an impressive 135 “forces”. The 1N series diesel engine (1.5 L) remains the same - 55 hp. Simple models were equipped with a 4-speed "mechanics" or a 3-speed "automatic", more powerful and expensive, respectively, received a 5MT or 4AT gearbox. Four-wheel drive was used in models with the 4E-F engine.  In the fourth generation, Toyota Starlet received the same suspension scheme (independent MacPherson front, semi-torsion rear), but their design was modernized. All-wheel drive cars received a continuous beam of the rear axle with other springs and shock absorbers. For the first time, Starlet had four-wheel disc brakes, which went to only the three-door GT model, the rest are content with the traditional design with ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear. Compared to its predecessor, the external dimensions have changed slightly and are: 3720 x 1600 x 1380 (L x W x H). The GT model is longer (3800 mm) and wider (1620 mm). The wheelbase (2300 mm) and a turning radius of 4.3-4.5 meters, which allows Starlet to turn around on a small patch, remain the same. The hatchback has a load capacity of 300 kg. Interior dimensions are as follows: 1700 x 1315 x 1155 mm. The trunk has a minimum volume of 226 liters. The folding rear seat backrest (in the expensive versions is divided) more than doubles it.

To increase safety, the Toyota Starlet P80 was the first in the class to install an ABS anti-lock braking system (manufacturer's option). The vehicle body met more stringent passive safety requirements. Standard equipment included front three-point belts with height adjustment, rear three-point belts (waist belt for the central passenger) were also installed on the rear seats.  Starlet was considered quite successful in the Toyota lineup. Due to the low prices for the main car models, it became possible to produce the optimal number of cars. Engine power has grown. During the period of active import of right-hand drive used cars into our country, Starlet was noticeably inferior in popularity to the more capacious Corolla / Sprinter, but due to its economy, they easily found buyers. It can be noted simplicity and maintainability, maneuverability, but, being light and short, the car is less stable on the highway.
