In December 1998, Toyota restyled its compact Starlet hatchback. Visual changes include the new design of the grille and front bumper, the front turn signals became transparent, and the headlights in some trim levels - multi-reflex. Safety has been enhanced by the adoption of standard belts with tensioners and force limiters, as well as the modernization of the brake system. The power units of the three-door version of the Toyota Starlet remained the same: a 1.3-liter gasoline with 82-85 hp. or 135 h.p. turbocharged as well as diesel 1.5 liters with a capacity of 55 hp
Toyota, in addition to producing the Starlet hatchback in two bodies (with three or five doors), also subdivided the lineup into several lines depending on the destination. The three-door Starlet includes three options: the standard Reflet, the retro version of the Carat and the sports Glanza models. All of them have their own design differences. The Starlet Reflet has a completely standard appearance, and in the cheapest version the car can have unpainted bumpers and mirror housings, but in the top-end configuration with a full package of equipment it even includes climate control. The Starlet Carat model is interesting with retro design elements: chrome front grille frame and decorative strip at the bottom of the front bumper, round reflectors of the rear lights, chrome trim plate license plate lighting. Sports Starlet Glanza standard have a special design front with large fog lights, plastic body kit, alloy wheels, rear spoiler, as well as many sports details in the interior.

The fifth-generation Toyota Starlet in the Reflet, Carat and Glanza S versions is equipped with a 4E-FE series gasoline engine with electronic injection system, its power is 82-85 hp. (at 5500 rpm), torque 116-118 Nm (at 4400 rpm). The engine is combined with a manual gearbox or with an "automatic", for some versions all-wheel drive is possible. The turbocharged 4E-FTE engine despite its modest displacement (the same 1331 cc as the base 4E-FE) produces a maximum of 135 “forces” (at 6400 rpm) and 157 Nm of torque (at 4800 rpm) min) and was able to disperse the hatchback to "hundreds" in 8 seconds, which is very good for that time. A diesel unit of the 1N series was also offered - with a capacity of 55 liters. with. (89Nm). But if a diesel engine is more likely an exclusive, then the Starlet gasoline engines of this generation can be called “popular”; experts note a good resource and do not name any particular problems with the E-series engines, unless weak crankshaft oil seals are considered one of the diseases.

The fifth-generation Toyota Starlet (P90) has MacPherson strut front suspension. The rear suspension is semi-torsion-bar. All-wheel drive cars have a continuous axle with other springs and shock absorbers at the rear. Fully disc brakes in this generation, as before, were installed only on the turbo three-door model (Glanza V), in other versions - ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum rear. The dimensions of the body of the Toyota Starlet P90 are as follows: length 3740-3790 mm, width 1625 mm, height 1400-1415 mm. The wheelbase is 2300 mm, the turning radius is 4.4-4.6 meters, depending on the diameter of the wheels. And if in simpler versions wheels with 13-inch wheels were installed, then Glanza V had 14-inch wheels. As for the dimensions of the cabin, they are: 1705 x 1375 x 1180 mm (L x W x H). The modest sized trunk has a volume of 216 liters (according to the VDA standard), folding in parts the rear seat (standard versions have a solid back, top separate) increases it more than double.

In addition to the fact that since 1998 the standard seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters appeared in the Toyota Starlet, the manufacturer added an auxiliary braking system. In addition, for cars of a later release, the passenger airbag (previously an option) becomes the standard. Thus, the list of standard equipment of the hatchback includes two front airbags, ABS, three-point seat belts on the rear rear seats, and stiffeners in the doors. The body type GOA meets the stringent requirements of crash tests.

The first generation Toyota Starlet appeared back in 1978. Since that time, the car has turned into a convenient, comfortable and safe city hatchback. The fifth generation is essentially an improved version of its predecessor. When developing a turbocharged modification (in this case, the Starlet hatchback can also be called fast), the sports image of the car - Starlet Glanza V, in which this engine is installed, was preserved, ideal for tuning, although these versions are quite rare. In general, the car has many advantages if you need a compact maneuverable car. Cons - a boring interior, stiffer suspension, low stability at high speeds. The successor of the Toyota Starlet is the Vitz hatchback, which rolled off the assembly line shortly before the cessation of production of this model.
