The fourth-generation Toyota Supra has a completely new design. From the previous angular models, the novelty, presented in 1993 at the Detroit auto show, was distinguished by its "puffy" shapes, a very expressive "big-eyed" front end and very spectacular round lenses of the rear optics. The smooth bends of the wings, as well as the powerful rear wing built into the rear cover, made the car look very harmonious. The model is still based on the same platform as the Soarer (Z30), but the shorter Supra has less axle spacing, and the fuel tank is not located under the rear seat, but under the trunk for better weight distribution. The car received new gasoline 3.0-liter “sixes” based on the 2JZ series (225 and 280 hp, atmospheric and turbo) and - for the first time - a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The 1993 Toyota Supra Salon impresses with its truly sporty and very ergonomic cockpit, which the manufacturer focused on in the first place, describing the advantages of the model in advertising catalogs. The center console is turned towards the driver, the tachometer is located in the center of the “tidy”, you can highlight the “grip” steering wheel and the closely located “handbrake”, conveniently shaped gear knob, “airplane” airflow deflectors and other features. Of the equipment, projector-type headlights and fog lights, sports seats with multi-position adjustments, various audio options, a rear wiper, climate control, and a leather interior were offered. The GZ and RZ modifications were equipped with a 3-liter turbocharged engine with a power of 280 hp and a torque of 432 Nm, thanks to which Supra was able to accelerate from zero to 100 km / h in 5.1 seconds. SZ models under the hood had a 3-liter naturally aspirated engine - 225 “forces” and 284 Nm, respectively. Modifications SZ-R, RZ and RZ-S were equipped with Bilstein shock absorbers and Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox, while the standard equipment included a 5-speed “mechanics”. There were modifications with an automatic transmission. On a higher class model, the limited slip differential was set as standard.
The chassis of the new Supra A80 received a familiar design - front and rear suspension with double wishbones. Toyota has given great importance to weight loss. Firstly, the content of aluminum alloys increased - of which the hood, subframe, engine and transmission crankcases, and suspension arms were made. In addition, the car has a plastic gas tank, the steering wheel is made of magnesium, and the spoiler is made hollow inside. The result - a hundred kilogram savings for the turbocharged version. The distribution of weight between the front and rear axles can be called almost ideal - 53:47. The car received wheels with dimensions 225 / 50ZR16 in front and 245 / 50ZR16 in the rear. Excellent braking was provided by ventilated disc brakes on both axles. The wheelbase shortened from 2595 to 2550 mm, the turning radius remained the same - 5.4 m. In size, compared with the predecessor, the car became a little shorter, but wider and lower, which positively affected stability. The interior dimensions have changed in appropriate proportions - the Supra, although it is declared a four-seater, but, as usual in such cars, the rear seats are rather symbolic. As for the trunk, someone can say that it is practically absent, but 185 liters are available, and they can be almost doubled, except that in this generation the back of the rear sofa folds only in its entirety. It is worth paying attention to the Supra version with a removable roof (targa). Of course, this is not a convertible, but such an option will allow you to enjoy a trip under the open sky.
In terms of safety, the Toyota Supra A80 is almost flawless, of course, by the demands of its time. The car was standardly equipped with a driver's airbag, a passenger was offered as an option, although, for example, in the USA, Supra was the first Toyota car to offer airbag for a passenger as standard. In all versions, the car is equipped with anti-lock braking system, side stiffeners.
Debuting under the slogan “The sport of Toyota”, the fourth-generation Supra has improved many times in terms of driving performance and safety performance. This car is more consistent with the uncompromising sports cars than its predecessor, it has become more powerful and lighter, while there are known cases of "swinging" of the 2JZ-GTE engine over a thousand "horses". When choosing a car, experts advise paying attention not only to the condition of the engine and chassis, but also to thoroughly checking the body.
