The car was a compact base model of Toyota, akin to the Corolla II and Corsa models. As part of this model range, not only a 4-door sedan was produced, but also a 3-door hatchback. A car with the same name first appeared in 1978 with the Corsa model. He, in fact, became the first compact car of the Toyota brand, which had front-wheel drive.
 In September 1990, the 4th generation car debuted. Until then, in the third generation, the car had a typically sporty look, especially the GP series cars. But then it was decided to return to the previous concept, as it were, to the starting point, increase its attractiveness, bring it to a different price level and make it a basic machine. In the design of the car, “round” surfaces were unconditionally preferred, and this was done with such a taste that the quality perception of the car only intensified. In other words, it was a stylish 3-door hatchback. Engines of three varieties were installed on the machine: 4-cylinder engines running on gasoline, with a displacement of 1.3 or 1.5 liters, and a 1.5-liter turbo diesel. A car equipped with a 1.5-liter engine could have four-wheel drive.
