Van
The reason for the popularity of the Lite Ace / Master Ace / Town Ace family of minibuses is the huge number of versions that were available under these three models. There are many versions: a different roof height was adjacent to a different number of hatches; one or two sliding doors; very luxurious or, on the contrary, unpretentious "wooden" interior. The Town Ace model at one time was created as an intermediate between the Lite Ace and HiAce and was distinguished by a wider and longer body than the Lite Ace, a larger base and interior up to seven or eight full seats (individual versions up to nine). In addition to comfortable passenger versions, which are indicated by the letter G (Wagon) in the body brand, very popular commercial Town Ace Van (V) were produced. The car had a rich line of gasoline and diesel engines ranging in volume from 1.3 to 2.0 liters. “Mechanics” was supplemented by “automatic”. There were options for the drive (rear or full).
A restyling carried out in 1988 changed the appearance of the Toyota Town Ace: the front and rear parts of the body were updated, the interior has a new rounded dashboard. Commercial models (Van) could not boast of a special wealth of equipment on board or interior decoration. Utilitarian cars with black bumpers might not have upholstery at all, and the only back sofa looked more like a bench. In the passenger Town Ace Wagon, one could observe the opposite picture: chic salons with carpets, upholstery for seats and panels with flock and digital instrument combinations. In "fat" trim levels like the Royal Lounge, there were separate second-row seats with individual armrests, a stove / air conditioner for the passenger compartment, a sky roof with six windows (an aquarium) or a twin moon roof with two hatches. In addition to good equipment, a wide range of accessories was offered, such as refrigerators, televisions or high-quality audio systems. With the formal separation of the Toyota Town Ace into passenger (G) and cargo-passenger (V) models, the engine range of these versions was slightly different, but in general it was very rich. Diesel engines are naturally aspirated 2C (2.0 L, 73 hp) and its turbocharged version 2C-T (85 HP), which was installed only on passenger models. Low-power gasoline modifications of the van with the base unit 4KJ (1.3 liters. 58 hp) managed to hold out on the assembly line until 1990. In the range was its 1.5-liter analogue of 5K (70 hp). There was a 1.8-liter 2YJ engine (79 hp). But nevertheless, for the comfortable and luxury “Towns”, the 3Y series engines with an EFI injection system (2.0 l, 97 hp) were more characteristic. With proper maintenance, the listed engines are unpretentious and resourceful, the best in this regard is an injector 2.0 liter. In diesel engines, due to design features, the slightest malfunctions of the cooling system can easily lead to overheating and cracking in the cylinder head. It is worth noting that the power unit on all Aces is located longitudinally above the front axle under the floor of the passenger compartment, which implies some difficulties in maintenance and repair.

With a continuous beam at the rear, the front suspension is an “adult” two-link design. Mandatory equipment for the Royal Lounge in 1988 was the TEMS electronically controlled suspension, which was offered as an option for Super Extra versions. The drive is carried out on back wheels. All-wheel drive models with front axle and lower gear have good cross, but the possibilities are limited by a low-hanging transfer case. Ground clearance - 160-180 mm. The minimum turning radius is 4.5 m. Compared to the Lite Ace model (this difference is typical for cars before 1992), the Town is more spacious - this is due to differences in the size of the body and wheelbase. The security approach is typical of the time when the Town Ace generation R20, R30 was produced. The car has an intrinsically safe design of the front panel and steering wheel, head restraints (for passenger-and-freight versions, only front ones integrated in the seatbacks) and seat belts (three-point for front seats and waist ones on the rear). The cabless body layout is not effective enough from the point of view of passive safety, but in those years was considered a common thing. The Lite Ace / Master Ace / Town Ace family was the forerunner of Toyota's large Emina family of minivans. Quality and popular! Suffice it to say that with these models the company conquered all of Asia, North America and the Pacific region. And in Russia, a whole generation has grown on the used Aces. Not surprisingly, these vans are among the largest second-hand vans on the market. Their advantages can be called reliability, endurance, spaciousness. The engines of those years are unpretentious in terms of fuel quality, generally simple and maintainable, although low-power and uneconomical. Finding a car in good technical condition will not be easy, but spare parts are more affordable than for some other Japanese counterparts in the class of the same years of manufacture.
