Restyling, carried out at the end of 2001, made some improvements to the design and construction of the Toyota Vitz hatchback. The front of the car has changed - it can be distinguished by the new grille and teardrop-shaped headlights. The taillights have changed, an additional brake light has appeared. Power indicators are slightly adjusted. Versions with a 1.0-liter engine were the first to be certified as “super-low emission” vehicles, and in 2002, 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter models received this correspondence. At the same time, the model with the newly developed 1.3-liter 2SZ -FE engine in combination with the variator and in the special “intelligent package” package - up to 25.5 km / l became the most economical.
 The interior of the updated Toyota Vitz is distinguished by a changed center console and instrument cluster, a different steering wheel design, a luggage compartment lamp is included in standard equipment. Witz still offers a variety of trim levels and improved equipment in more expensive versions, where a digital instrument panel, automatic transmission, power windows and mirrors, DVD player, LCD with navigation, automatic air conditioning are installed. RS sports models feature exterior and interior details that match the sporting spirit. A number of solutions have increased the practicality of the hatchback - new storage compartments have appeared in the cabin, and optional special bumpers in the seat cushions will prevent shopping bags from falling from the passenger seat and rear sofa during sudden braking. An interesting offer of 2002 was the “D package Beautiful Selection” configuration based on the U and F models with two remote keys, folding mirrors, voice navigation included in standard equipment. Toyota Vitz 2001-2005 offers four engine options with the VVT-i variable valve timing system. The smallest 1SZ-FE with a volume of 1 liter produces 70 horsepower - with it the Vitz can drive up to 19.6-22 km on one liter of fuel, with an “eco package” - up to 22.5-24 km. However, new modifications with the 1.3-liter 2SZ-FE engine are now considered even more economical. With a power of 87 hp and in combination with the CVT, the car is capable of driving up to 25.5 km on one liter of gasoline. This data is relevant for models with the special “intelligent package” package since 2003: the engine automatically shuts off during stops, and a powerful lithium-ion battery is used to start it, recharging during the trip. Fuel economy: almost 0.5 liters compared to standard equipment. In the version with the previous 1.3 L 2NZ-FE engine, the hatchback has a reserve of 88 “forces”, and the mileage on one liter of gasoline is up to 18-20.5 km. The most suitable choice in terms of power is a 1-liter engine 1NZ-FE: 109-110 “forces”, flow rate 15.2-17 km / l. The manufacturer did not stop with these modifications, and in 2003 the “RS turbo” model was released with a turbo engine based on the standard 1.5 “RS” modification with TRD (Toyota Race Development) components - 150 “horses” under the hood turn the Vitz into a real “beast”.

 Vitz front suspension - suspension strut with coil spring, rear - torsion bar on springs, with the exception of all-wheel drive versions, where the rear axle is a continuous axle. The durability and reliability of the Vitz lightweight chassis is beyond any doubt. And its compactness creates all conditions for high maneuverability. The minimum turning radius of the car is only 4.3 meters. This is one of the best in its class.

 After restyling, Vitz standard safety systems of the first generation include airbags for the driver and front passenger, anti-lock brakes and brake force distribution system, child seat fasteners, three-point seat belts. Crash tests showed that, despite its modest size, the body, equipped with additional stiffeners, holds quite a good lateral and frontal impact.
