The first generation City, whose body was notable for its relatively high height, gained immense popularity. The second generation of this car (GA2), which began to be produced in 1986, corresponds to the 3-door hatchback in body design, but the appearance has gained more sporty features due to the low wide wedge-shaped wheels with wide wings placed at the corners. The overall appearance is complemented by narrower headlights. To improve performance, the weight of the car was reduced. The hatchback was the only body in this generation (the former had a convertible). Under the hood of the 1986-1988 Honda City is the new D12A carburetor engine with a capacity of 1.2 liters (76 hp).
 The interior of the second-generation Honda City has retained the hereditary features reflected in some details of the front panel (the shape of the steering wheel, duct deflectors, etc. d.), however, the panel has become more modern in appearance and less angular. Although she lost a convenient long shelf underneath, the new car has a spacious glove compartment and a fully plastic interior. Compared to its predecessor, it was possible to reduce the noise level (up to 69 dB at a speed of 100 km / h). The initial BB package includes halogen headlights, a fully folding rear seat back, tachometer, and a curtain in the trunk. The EE version will offer a rear wiper and rear window defroster, radio. The top model GG was distinguished by a standard transparent smoky glass sunroof. A varied list of additional equipment was offered, depending on the configuration.

 The second-generation Honda City in 1986 received the recently developed high-performance 16-valve D12A engine (working volume 1237 cm3), the maximum power of which reaches 76 horsepower at 6500 rpm, which, with the weight of the car only 700 kg, allows us to talk about some of it “ sportiness ”(specific power less than 10 kg / l. with.). As the manufacturer noted, in the original SOHC design of the new Honda engine, an arrangement of valves similar to DOHC units was implemented, with 4 valves per cylinder but one camshaft, which makes the engine compact, with a minimum width and height of the cylinder head. Due to the introduction of new materials and technologies, the weight has been further reduced - rigid aluminum rocker arms, aluminum cylinder block, lightweight high-strength valve springs, etc. e. Together, this provided excellent weight and power rates in the 1.2 liter class. Carburetor - electronically controlled. In addition to a mechanical 5-speed gearbox, a 4-band Hondamatic automatic transmission was offered with an electronically controlled locking mechanism that implements a fairly smooth and direct response and optimally controls the locking time and fuel consumption, which was low - the car could travel up to 18 km on one liter of gasoline (5.6 l / 100 km). The design of the Honda City GA2 suspension uses MacPherson struts in front and a torsion beam at the rear - a balance is reached between ride comfort, stability and handling, the latter is also supported by the presence of a power steering as standard. The car has a reduced center of gravity, a wider track (1400/1410 - front / rear), the wheelbase is increased from 2220 to 2400 mm. Body dimensions: total length 3560 mm, width 1620 mm, height 1335 mm. Interior dimensions: 1675 x 1315 x 1105 (L x W x H). The trunk is small, but a folding rear seat allows it to be increased.

 The safety of the second-generation Honda City met the current requirements of its time. The car body met the necessary standards of passive safety. With the change of generations, Honda City has increased power, driving performance, economy, and the interior looks more noble.
