The sixth generation Honda Civic demonstrates the next phase of global change. The car received a new wheelbase and added in length. Although the weight increased, it was partly offset by the increased engine power, which, in turn, seriously improved their environmental performance and efficiency - a variator appeared in the battle for the last parameter, due to which the offer for transmission also expanded. In his homeland in Japan, Civic for the third time achieves the title of "Best Car of the Year." In general, this generation retained the principles implemented in previous generations, in particular regarding the best racing traditions of Honda. So the appearance of the super-modification Type R with a powerful 185-horsepower engine in 1997 can be considered quite natural. It is worth noting that the Integra and NSX models have modifications with the same name. Compared with the previous generation, the hatchback's modification line has become one less “intermediate” configuration. For the most unpretentious buyers, only the basic EL equipment with a 1.3-liter engine and a slightly changed level of equipment was left, which allowed to give priority to the filling of more expensive VTi, Ri and SiR trim levels. As for the top version of Type R, this modification, intended only for the domestic market, has acquired a special personality - due to the presence of an aerodynamic body kit and reduced ground clearance by 15 mm. And if you add Recaro sports seats, Momo steering wheel, a titanium gear knob, which is pleasant to hold in your hands, and a carbon dashboard, to the reinforced brake system, LSD, sports ABS, which make the car's driving performance perfect, it’s clear how much a pronounced sports image has this car. In the design of the cockpit, it is worth noting the special arrangement of pedals specially adapted for active sports driving. Summing up, we can say that the Honda Civic Type R is a first-class sports car.

As before, some Honda Civic engines have a SOHC design with one overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. The engine range starts with a 1.3-liter engine. With electronic fuel injection (Honda PGM-FI), its power is now 91 hp. at 6300 rpm. One and a half liter engine for picking VTi power of 130 hp got a 3-stage SOHC VTEC system. This system is a combination of SOHC VTEC and SOHC VTEC-E. Only one valve works at low revs, both valves at medium revs, and high-performance cams come into action at high revs. Thus, significantly improved efficiency compared to previous modifications of the motor. For SiR / SiR II modifications, 1.6 liter B16A (DOHC VTEC) engines are designed in 155 hp versions. (with automatic transmission) and 170 hp (Manual transmission). Well, the specially modified 1.6-liter B16B engine closes the line, the power of which is brought up to 185 hp. This motor is designed for the top-of-the-range Type R equipment, the field of activity of which includes active participation in racing competitions, and which is equipped with only a 5-speed manual transmission. The car's suspension has a double independent lever-type design, most suitable for the implementation of the Honda Civic sports character. However, to the basic trim levels, as before, this applies to a lesser degree: the front and rear stabilizers are the prerogative of only more expensive trim levels, but for the SiR versions, a front strut is added to further increase rigidity. Accordingly, other suspension settings are provided due to stiffer springs and shock absorbers of sports modifications.

Raising the car to a new level, the manufacturer changed the approach to equipment in terms of safety. Now, even in the basic configurations, front airbags were optionally offered (since 1996 - the standard). The equipment of expensive complete sets includes an anti-lock brake system. The SiR II and Type R trim levels feature an LSD limited slip differential (in combination with a 5-speed manual gearbox).

Honda Civic - a great car, suitable (as the name implies) both for "civilian" purposes, and for the implementation of an active driving style. Sixth-generation cars, despite their moral and physical obsolescence, still show an acceptable balance between price and technical condition. And, of course, with this in mind, the price difference between the proposed copies of this generation can be very significant.
